Hi all,
I am a courier and bought a 2012 versa SL for dependability and gas mileage. I have 19000 miles on it and the gas mileage is very unpredictable. Yes , when on highway I drive with traffic but not over 80. Drove to Miami yesterday and got 31 average both ways. mileage was better in winter. Tires are 33 and use Mobile1 synthetic 5/20 oil and always costco gas.Any ideas?-

EPA says 30 to 33 mpg combined. Sounds like you're okay.

The average speed of the EPA highway test is only 48mph.

Yes

1. slow down. the faster you drive, the more gas you burn. At 80 mph, you not only risk a ticket, you burn more gas. 31 mpg at those speeds is very good. I understand that a courier delivers time sensitive materials, but just slowing down to 70 mph could net you up to 5 more mpg. Slowing 65 mph, even more more.

2. Carry only what you really need in the car. Keep the tool kit in the garage. EPA says an extra 100 pounds could cost you 1-2% in gas mileage.

3. if you have a roof rack, remove it. kills gas mileage

4. don't remote start your car and let it warm up, or let it idle while you make deliveries. Pure gas waster.

5. Fill up your car early in the morning or at night, especially in warm climates. Gasoline expands when it warms up and is more dense when cooler.
