If an alternator cannot cool properly, it will not lwast as long.

Your history verifies this, at least anecdotally.

...uhhhh, less than $100 in REPAIRS in 12 years ownership (idle adjustment at dealers when getting Bose amps replaced under warranty, and oil pressure sensor switch), and about 114K miles! Vehicle showing a little over 137K presently (in winter storage at summer home). Lots spent on maintenance (T3 said "one of the best original Qs ever seen" when there in 2000 for guides, etc.). Can still CRUISE at 100+++ mph (wide open NM roads), returning nearly 20 mpg. Continue to believe it is one of the finest mass produced road cars yet. Leave for Germany on Tueday, and always have an S Klasse at my disposal, currently a CLS 550. Nice, but, I do believe the early Qs have better fit and finish than current Benzes. And, like most, I piss and moan at our petrol prices, but will be seeing gas at well over $8 pg while over there. Count your blessings!

Photos and more commentary when you return, sir!

Surely Benzin is more like $10/US gal.?

1996 Q45 Bought it with 142,000 in 2003 at a auction .

Put about $2,500 in it over 5 years not counting tires, brakes, regular maintenance ect. That includes rebuilding the transmission.

It now has 216,000 miles. It is in need of some care that I have been putting off but I am in sales and I drive about 17,000-20,000 a year now in LA area and it still runs strong.

Planning on buying a hybrid next year but will keep the Q45 for sure and drive it on the weekends.

I just think that theses car need to be driven I have a feeling it will die if I dont drive it often. If I dont drive it for 2 days I has a little delay in starting right up.

About $6000 in the last 12 months, mostly wear items needed to get through the next 160K miles. 10 years of ownership and this car has never once failed to start, left me sitting on the side of the road, or been on a tow hook.

On average I'm a little under Q45Tech's $3000 per year but I tend to take the car off the road for a couple of weeks a year and do most of the work my self. I've had a number old Brit sports cars as well as a Ferrari 330GT as daily drivers. Keeping a Q alive is a piece of cake IF YOU PLAN AHEAD and fix it BEFORE it breaks!

If I was home more (I am only home a couple of weekends a month) I would buy the used up Qs as parts cars, strip them out, keep the best bits, and sell the rest. There is a good market especially for electrical goodies.

Took possesion of my '94 Q about five years ago with 60K miles on it, maintenance current. I am now up to 117K with about $4,000 in parts doing my own work. If you count labor, had a shop done the work, then you might be talking about $10,000. The biggest expense was fuel injectors with about 12 new ones($135 each) over that period of time. Other Big items: Fuel Pump, Water Pump, TCS, Front Radial Arm Bushings, Two Brake Callipers, Oxgen Sensors, Injector Harness, Knock Sensors, Knock Sensor Harness, Front Upper Control Arms, Front Tokico Shocks, Paint Job. Getting ready to do Front Lower Control Arm Bushings and Ball Joints as well as Rear Tokicos. So I would say it is costs about $2000 a year to maintain this car starting from moderate mileage with current maintenance.
