What do you guys think of Pocket Bikes? You know, the mini motorcycles.

I have an opputurnity to get in on an investment and I'm not sure if they are poplular enough to really do it. Give me some feedback.

I would say don't invest in these.. the craze for this is on a decline. I know people are still buying them but the prices are high and I don't know... just seems like the people who wanted them already have them and the rest just won't buy them cuz of the prices...

They're cool but not worth the investment. They're only meant to be used on a track but people buy them to use on the street. Around here the cops will take pocket bikes away from people using them on the street. With word of that going around, their popularity is slowly diminishing.

Playing Devil's Advocate here, the price on regular bicycles have gone up enormously. My brother's 10 speed cost him $1000 and his neighbor has one of those $3000 bikes. These things are literally a fraction of those prices.

But as you said, those that had to have them do. And gnik also made a valid point. I don't see too many of them down here and those I have seen were being ridden in neighborhoods that don't get patrolled regularly. Good stuff.

Anyone else?

actually people around here use them to get around campus, theyre very convenient for that sort of thing, so theyre replacing the mopeds with these.

Excellent point. I never thought about the college side. If the campus is alright with the use of them then there are two valid points. 1. It's cheaper than buying and keeping up a car. 2. Less gas, better security cause you can take it to your dorm room.

Good stuff nismofly.

Til kids start racing in the hallways!

I agree their popularity is on the decline. But hey, Ive seen more of these than the 'ground-breaking' Segway.

LOL That'd be a great episode of CSI.

Was this college student victim to his own recklessness, or did someone put a monkeywrench in his plans?

Katherine - "What kind of kid tries to ramp a pocket bike off the 5th floor of a dorm?

Grissom - "Maybe these blowflies can tell us."

Sorry...good point too. Always give extra points for stupidity.

U.C. Berkeley, CSU Hayward, and U.C Davis just banned them from campus out here after complaints of racing. I'd love to have one myself but I'd rather find a track so I can use it legally with no worries. Til then my Razor scooter is still enjoyable or rollerblades.

Definitely on the decline, they're loads of fun though. I think I'm going to snake one for xmas too. My rationale to my mother is that she either needs to get me a pocket bike for xmas, or I'll go out and buy a REAL sportbike and probably wind up a smear on the pavement somewhere, lol.

What is your asking price going to be on them?(If you invest in a bulk purchase, I'm assuming..)-Kev

Well, I've decided to not bulk purchase but to instead place it on my site as a special order item. The style on the pic would be $475 but the chopper style is $575. One other concern that helped me in the decision making was the shipping. It's not like a header or even a muffler to ship. It's a little bit more expensive so it either comes out of the customers pocket or mine. A decision I'd rather not make.

I think it's a fad that is on the decline... wrong time to be putting investment money into it.

I'm 6'2''. It's kinda hard to ride one. But even if I did fit on one, I'd still rather ride my Honda XR500.

I don't dislike them either though. Their just not my thing. Although, there are a couple of kids in my parents' neighborhood who I have nearly hit many times because they just dart around on the street...they even ride the thing on main street, which is also a major highway and has a speed limit of 45 mhp.

But that's the kids that are stupid, not the bike.

Jayson, the people that sell pocket bikes out here always provide a disclosure sort of agreement between the dealer and customer saying the dealer is not responsible for how the product is used. You should definitly include that whenever somebody wants to buy one from you. Should they use it on the street (which is illegal), get hurt and then have their parents file suit, you have that agreement to fall back on. If you don't include that agreement then they can just say they were never made aware of the fact that pocket bikes are illegal (in most states on the streets).

Dude, no one ever heard of them until the motorcycle stunt groups started playing with them (LVX). Then everyone who watched their vids, started asking the bike shops where they could get one. And now they are selling them everywhere.

I wouldn't ever buy one, but there are far younger people than I with enough money to throw away.

I would however on the other hand, sale them. They are doing fairly well. And you may be able to do alright on them.

EDIT: The other poster may be right. Could be on the decline. Fad's are like that. But they always come back around in 20 years.

Gnik,

I worked at the dealership long enough to know that everything is disclosed up front and such disclosure is documented; in writing, on video, on wav, and encrypted in the customer's DNA.

The best thing about living in Shreveport is that everything is fad. If anyone on the board other than me is from S'port or lives here...no offense but we are some of the most 'jump on the bandwagon' people you ever want to meet. And the worse thing about it is, we do so ignorantly. When it was undecided whether we would get casino's or not, the politicians that would get kickbacks were like, "Yeah, they're great for the economy." and everyone just jumped aboard. I was too young to vote but you better believe I constantly made a ruckus about it in our teen summits and speech class. Sure enough, a decade later, we've had three or four come and go and Shreveport isn't any better.

Sorry, we're talking about pocket bikes. I think there is still some profit to be made but not enough for me to bulk buy. We've got a lot of country down here where people can go to ride and have fun without much danger of injury or prosecution but I wouldn't tell them that.

Personally, I like the chopper style and I think it'll sale better in this market.
