I thought I'd share a recent issue and fix on my '98 Q (158k miles).
I got a check engine light but the car was running fine. I reset it a few times but it kept coming back. I bought an OBD code reader and it gave me an 0400 EGR code.
The car was running fine, but I had noticed a slight "burning" smell in my garage a few times and even inside the car once or twice. It wasn't strong, and I wasn't sure where it was coming from.
I got under the hood with a flash light and noticed a slightly dirty area at the back of the plenum, around the EGRC-BPT valve. It wasn't the kind of dull, dusty dirty look everywhere else. It was dark and slightly carbon-like/oily.
I then found my culprit. There is a small (roughly 2") rubber hose at the bottom of the EGRC-BPT valve. The service manual says it provides exhaust pressure to the valve. So obviously it gets hot from exhaust gas and the hose was completely rotted/split. (by the way, the shop manual says the trouble code for the EGRC-BPT valve is 0402, by my scanner had given me the 0400 code)
So the exhaust gas was causing the slight burnt smell and the dirty area on the back of the plenum.
I replaced the hose and reset the code and haven't had a problem since.
I highly recommend this $.50 piece of rubber tubing be replaced on everyone's Q as a maintenance item for cars with more than 80k miles or more than 6 or 7 years old. Why wait for a problem to happen. It took 10 minutes to replace.
