A guy spend how many thousands of dollars on an s2000 but makes a splitter out of plywood? Seems kinda cheap to me. If you do it, at least use something like aluminum or some kind of metal.

But then again, its your car, you can do whatever you like.

the guy's also rockin rotas. Not surprised, lol.

But yeah.. that's probably the ghettoest thing by far haha.

I mean, doesn't wood get soft when its wet? And wouldn't it be heavy too?

I was thinking of how ghetto it might look, but it actually looks good. I think if you did the project with some precision it would turn out well.

Looks pretty nice for some 1/4" plywood and door trim. The custom aluminum one another guy made at the end of that thread is even better though.

I'm surprised guys on an S2000 forum approved of it, yet Nico isn't too thrilled about it. Haha who would have thought?

If he put that much time into a plywood splitter, why not put that time into something that wont soak up water, get all moldy, and fall apart, like alum?

I do not know why I was thinking about those wood push things a lot of people have on their trucks around here for pushing race cars when I first saw this topic.

i'm still gonna do it. yeah it may be ghetto but wood can be treated and painted. it's also alot cheaper than aluminum. if i could find some decently cheap aluminum i'd give it a try. this splitter would also not be on daily it would only go on when i go to an autox.

i'd also be able to forgive myself easier if i fuc* up cutting the wood. i'd just go grab another 10 dollar sheet.

It's actually pretty ingenius. How many of you guys have destroyed your front bumper, lip, or kit? And if you regularly track your car, why would you destroy an expensive lip on a regular basis? The plywood becomes a weak link. I would much rather have a cheap peice of plywood that is easily (cheaply) replaced then have one that is too strong rip the whole front end off. There is more than one guy that uses plywood for the same reason on his Spec Honda racer.

+1 for the budget racer.

Besides, I bet half the people on this forum have some sort of ghetto-rig on their car. In fact it's probably a more important component too...

This is exactly why plywood is so usefull for a splitter build.

Sure other materials might be lighter... but strength wise... plywood is hard to beat for the buck. You destroy it... cut out another and bolt it on. For like 10bucks? You can cut out a few.... and have spares ready.

I'll be using corrugated plastic to build my first one... I got the material for free and am using it as a test though. If it works ... great... if not... I'll use it to cut out plywood probably. Alumalite would be my primary choice... but it isn't the easiest to find (some sign shops stock it) and it isn't cheap.

Splitters die ugly deaths on track... cheap is good for most people.

I cant believe some of you are so quick to judge the plywood splitter. go on yahoo and search how many different venues have been doing this. for the price it cant be beat. There are many ways to protect these from the elements.

there is some guy running around town with about an '88 mr2, pretty clean except he used plywood and sheetrock screws to make a body kit, giant wing and these shark fin things that are about 2 inches tall, two on the hood and some behind the doors or something. i pulled up next to him and my buddy and i just laughed at him, must happen often because he just glared at us. but plywood on your car, come on

If I were to do it........... I would do it the same way, but with 1/8th in floor plate. Carbon steel is real cheap, and with galvinize spray, spray paint, and several other options, it would be much more solid than the wood.

aluminum is realitively cheap these days

also, isnt a sheet of plastic stupid cheap? Ive never looked into it, but I cant imagine it is that expensive. hell you could steal a dust cover from a buick or something at the junkyard for cheap Im sure.

I guess I could see doing it with masonite, but plywood...... wouldnt be high on my list.

Metal and Plastic cost between 4x and 10x as much as plywood. Plywood is also far easier to cut using standard tools (well plastic is pretty easy to cut too). I think someone in the linked thread mentioned fiberglass resin to seal it, then paint. That would be light, stiff, and wouldn't absorb water and wouldn't mold. I think its a great idea.

And, like BH said, its something that real racers have been doing for years.

Oh yeah man, go join a forum just to say something negative then be right on your way. That's the definition of a troll. But hey man, I would have to give you hella tite E-props for such a courageous move. Good luck on any future hella tite free mods bro. The guy with an S2000 is a ricer because he planned and carried out a design to make a functional, cost efficient splitter. That actually took skill. You just found a piece of a truck bumper on the interstate and attached it to your car. Hella tite logic bro!

I hope the guy never decides to drive backwards, the flames from his exhaust might ignite his splitter.

BTW what function does that thing actually have?

It's actually a good material to use for several of the qualities already mentioned, including being relatively inexpensive. The ply wood probably has as much or a little flex as a sheet of CF, I have a CF splitter I'm not using and I can see the advantages of a plywood version. It's about the shape and aerodynamics and less about the looks. You could do a layer of fiberglass to make it water resistant and give it a nice clean smooth finish and you'd never know, it might make it a bit heavy. I would also design an aluminum bracket to support it (splitter) from the chasis to more effectively handle the down force it would create under speed. I am less confident that front bumper itself would be enough to handle the load, especially if it's an aftermarket FRP .
