Has anyone heard anything about converting the Altima hybrid engine into a plug-in hybrid version? The Altima Hybrid engine is the same one as what Toyota is putting into the Camry Hybrid, and the Camry is being converted at certain sites across the country. I'm hoping that someone who visits this website might have some crumbs for me to follow and lead me towards having someone convert the car to plug-in, or sharing specs so that I can convert it myself. It can't be that hard, right?

Nothing yet, but seeings as the Prius mod is 10k, I am guessing it will cost the same/more. Are you THAT interested in having a PHEV?

I think that I am that interested in converting my car. I have been interested in plug-in hybrids for as long as they have existed (which is about six years so far). I figured that if I can convert the car, then I can get the absolute best of both worlds; the Nissan Altima Hybrid is the highest-end luxury version of the car, replete with all the goodies (GPS, energy flow, XM Radio, 6 CD changer, heated seats, the works). My car was about $32k, so I could go as high as adding an extra $10k for the plug-in add-on. I know that I will probably not have the car long enough to recoup the cost in gas savings, however for me that's not the point; I am becoming more green as time moves forward, and I want to support an industry that will not be sent offshore, that will pull America out of the gears of mideast oil/terrorism, that turns America towards a greener future, etc.etc. Maybe there will be someone at the Washington Auto Show this upcoming weekend who will have info? I'll post updates as I find them, and thanks for the reply!
