As most of you know, i am going to replace my knock sensors (hopefully Im going to order by friday)....... I will do all the hoses and all the junk under there..... But I only want to replace the hoses applied under the plenum........

So........1. what parts am I going to need...... I know im gonna need the KS, what hoses are necessary??2. <i have done a search, with no avail>, what things need to be removed to undo the plenum....3. Also, what things should be done underplenum besides doing the hoses, the KS, and ohm-ing the injectors..... I am nto game for doing the valve covers.... I think the plenum will suffice for this time around!! And their not that bad, just a wee bit of leakage on the drivers side......4. I have access to a parts cleaner (its an ozzy if that rings a bell to anyone)...... Would it be OK to let the plenum sit in the stuff for a few days......5. I was getting ready to do the TB job last weekend with the Tstat job, but I wasnt sure how to take off the throttle cables?? Its probably simple, but how is it done??

Just so you know, after doing this, I plan on doing an EXTENSIVE write up with lots of pictures, so I need the info!!! I use my digital camera to take pictures to make sure i know what it is supposed to look like when I go to put it back together, and I think an hour of my time to write an article is the least I can do to NICO and all the people that have put up with my endless questions........

Joe at Scottsdale has the parts list for all the under plenum hoses. You might want to go for a knock sensor harness, too (I did). The throttle cable brackets unbolt from the passenger side of the plenum, don't remove the cables from their anchor points. At the TB the single cable just slides out thru a slot in the side of the channel (move the throttle plate by hand to allow enough slack). Having just done this, a long needle nose pliers was my main tool to reach and compress the hose clamps. Just pull off every hose and connector you can see, and then look for the ones you didn't see. The toughest to get to (probably took me half an hour) was one coming straight up from the valley to the bottom of the plenum next to the TB. Remove the TB first, you'll need a 6mm hex head on an extention. The lower two TB to plenum bolts are invisible, just reach in wil the 6mm to where they should be. Also, there is a Y shaped rubber hose next to the firewall down low that needs to come off. The big metal pipes in that area can stay attached to the plenum if you get the Y hose. Good luck, don't drop any tools, and cover the intakes as soon as they're exposed.

Also, are there other sensors that are under the plenum that fail???

What is that Y shaped hose you were talking about????

What (and where do) hoses connect to the plenum for removal......

Edit: Here is my parts list for now..... 1. Under-plenum hose kit (Joe will help me decide what I need)2. 2 knock sensors3. knock sensor harness4. 2 steering rack dust boots5. TB gasket6. 8 plenum gaskets7. EGR gasket

Anything Im missing, or anything that needs to be added????

That Y shaped hose would be the one on the IAC. I left it connected to the IAC and the other pipe that runs under the plenum, and disconnected the 3rd end down low by the firewall. I have the plenum removal pics that Daedalus posted last year, very illustrative. If someone can tell me how to upload & post them, I will. What's the consensus on re-using the spring hose clamps under plenum vs new worm-gear clamps ?

You should also check radiator hoses, crank case hoses and the IAC hoses. Also, Joe includes the plenum gaskets in his set.

Nick

P.S. You replaced those O2 sensors yet? With the plenum off it's good to do.

The O2 sensors are in the exhaust manifold--not sure if there's any benefit to having the plenum off for them, especially if you go in from the bottom with a crow-foot wrench. There are at least a couple hose sets available from Joe. Not a bad idea to order them all. Qdog the spring hose clamps are probably good...none of them seemed too weakto me. Just pay attention to how much they squeeze the hose. The more critical clamps use screw tensioners.

Qdog... Email me...... I can put those pictures on my website when I do my write up....... Can you see what you are unplugging when you are doing the IAC, or do you have to feel around????

Nick..... Havent done the o2 sensors, im gonna do those later since this is taking a big hit out of my pocket..... Also, I inspected my radiator hoses when I did the Tstat...... They seem to be pretty good.....

When I call Joe, is there a specific "kit" that I need to ask for, or do I just say I need the under plenum hoses??? Also, I remember when I searched that the brake booster hose isnt included, which definitely needs replacing......

Here is a complete 'hose order'for a 1995 Q45/t non-TCS. (with knock sensors and harness thrown in for good measure.)

Thanks to Frank and Joe at infinitipartsusa.com (888) 216-5328 for revising and completing this order.

These are the exact terminology used by infiniti (useless, eh?) You'll need 8 of the manifold gaskets,

Also, was the total of 370 for all the hoses listed (including the radiator and heater hoses).......

This is all hoses. Joe can inform you best about current costs, since I don't know them.

I understand the heater hoses are easier to replace with the plenum off.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t

It looks like I will be doing the plenum removal thing, as well. I need all the help I can get.

Dumb question #1: What is Joe at Scottsdale's phone number?

Dumb Question #2: Can I get the diagrams emailed to me, my cheap-a$$ CD Manual sucks!

Thanks!

For what it's worth I would purchase some heat shielded tubing for all your sensor wires. When I did a plenum job I was amazed how cracked and brittle all the protective sleeves on the OEM wiring had become, just like the air hoses. I found some heat resistant tubing at a street rod shop and re-sleeved anything electrical under the plenum. Word to the ham-fisted like me, watch the torque on those plenum bolts, they break very easy..don't ask how I know! That fat hose to the bottom of the plenum in front of the IAC can slip off very easy when re-installing, I ended up using a worm drive clamp after having to pull that beast twice when it popped off. Good luck, this forum will give you the moral support you need to get through it. Next time will be a charm...next time?

We'll all love ya forever!!!!LOL Will be my deciding factor in either doing it all myself, or calling Keith Vanmeter (the Jersey Q guru!). Jeff

Jeff, maybe you should submit Keith Vanmeter information to the articles editor for inclusion on the recommended shops. His posts on Yahoo and a couple here seem to be indicative of someone who cares and has a degree of competence.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t

maxnix, i'm going back and forth between the satisfaction of doing it myself (and risk the frustration of screwing it up myself, not to mention the money saved) and paying to have it done right the first time. I would totally trust Keith to do the job 100%. he's an infiniti master tech with an old connection at the dealership so parts are not a problem. He did my guides, water pump, plugs, and oil pump, and was completely satisfied. for whatever reason, he gravitated toward the yahoo site after i told him about nico (he had no idea these sites existed, but promised him i would give him a good review here). if i let him do my plenum/KS/O2 sensors, will try to convince him to become more active here. he'd really make a nice addition to dennis, he is VERY knowledgable on all things Q, trust me (he's done many, MANY guide jobs, and comes with the highest recommendation from his old parts manager from the Maple Shade Infiniti dealership). i'm trying to schedule a consult at the local infiniti dealer to really pinpoint any/all of the problems. the main being a burping/hesitation at sustained speed between 40 and 70,,,,indicitive of the knock sensors.......... jeff

Every hose in engine compartment is roughly $1,000 at dealer list or $750-$800 from Scottsdale.

Wes, it's for all parts above that line that states the price. I am sure a lot has changed.

One thing not everyone realizes is that Nissan is starting to penalize us for drving an older Q45. Brake pads have gone from the $40s to the $60s. Expect every other part to increase likewise.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45
