Hey people :) , My dad came yesterday from new jersey and he brought me an 89 240sx hatch. It cost him $1500, it was from the original owner and the interior and the paint is immaculate.

I showed the car off to my friends and then when they left, I washed the outside of the car. As I was washing the outside I noticed that where the spoiler mounts to the car was some rust, so I decided to check the rest of the car for signs of rust.

OMG, you wont believe how rusted this car is underneath. Worst of all the chassis is rusted aswell, to the point where you can tear off pieces of it. I was so dissapointed when I saw this. I just act like I love the car so my dad won't feel hurt, (he did give it to me for free you know). The sides of the car, like by the sideskirts and rear skirts are rusted a bit also, the engine bay has some rust also. I drove the car and it felt pretty normal.

What should I do, Should I spend any money on this car? I'm really into handling and auto-X but would the rusted chassis have any affects? Do any of you guys have a rusty 240sx, if yes are you still willing to spend money on it? Should I just make it my point A to point B car?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

uhhh well that does not seem very safe. if the chassis is all rusted and you can break parts of it off, i think i would not drive that car. i think your dad would be glad to see you in a safe car rather than see you fall through the floor of the car on the freeway.

Your dad went all the way up to NJ just to pick up a S13 for you? Wow, what a nice dad. Once my old Integra's radiator blew up on the freeway a mile away from home on a hot summer day. I walked all the way home to pick up my tools only to have my dad tell me, "it's your car, I don't give a ƒuc|<." So I ended up walking back to my car with radiator fluid and tools.

If you value your health, tell your dad. He might be able to do something about it.

You have a nice dad. Let him know about the rust you found and maybe he'll have an opinion on what to do. I am sure he is concerned about the product he bought as well as any safety issues it might pose.

As for putting money into the car, if you want to make it a more comfortable daily driver, go for it. I wouldn't go all out with a new suspension or motor though. Keep the expenses low (maybe a new stereo, inexpensive rims, other comfort items, air filter, maybe exhaust). It probably won't be the best auto-x'er, but if you want to auto-x you should do alright even stock.

Good luck!
