Post

I have a 2008 Nissan 2wd Pathfinder SE.

This is what happened. I have been posting in this forum (you can see my post) about how the service engine soon light came on and it was a code P0455 (which is an fuel evaporation leak problem). I replaced the old gas cap with a new one and the service engine soon light came back on.

Well I was searching through the net and came across a topic from Nico forums. The topic was about how you could reset the service engine soon light on the R50 and R51 Pathfinders ecu. It gave instructions such as 1) turning the engine to start waiting three seconds 2) then depressing the accelerator five times within five seconds 3) waiting seven seconds then holding down the accelerator ten seconds until the check engine light starts blinking. There are several more steps but I left the papers out in the shop.

I preformed the steps several times b/c my timing (waiting the right amount of seconds performing each step was off). Well I finally got it until the check engine light was blinking, but I must have messed up the timing on the next steps b/c I started the truck up and the check engine soon light was still on. I kept repeating the steps and couldn't get the timing of the steps right.
I went to crank the truck up and it would not start. It sounded like the starter was just clicking. I did not know what happened so I tried to repeat the process again. While preforming step 2 where you press the accelerator 5 times I accidently hit the brake.

Now the truck will not start, the radio acts like it is trying to eject a cd and will not play, the battery light is on , and the brake light is on.

I unhooked the negative battery cable for a while. Put the cable back on and it still does the same thing. I have the battery cable unhooked and will try and put it back on late tomorrow, but I have know idea if the truck will go back to normal.
The only thing I can think of is I repeated the steps so many times trying to get the check engine soon light to reset in the ecu that I must have performed other procedures or just really messed my truck up bad.

This is my families way of going and I really messed this one up. Does anybody know how I can fix this mess. I can't even crank it to take it to the Nissan dealership. Any help whatsoever would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
brc

According to page 36 of the "general information" section of the factory service manual ( http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Pathfinder/ ... der/gi.pdf ), there's some required procedures after battery disconnection.
"BRC -11" and "BRC - 131" is supposedly what it says.

It just says it wants you to use Consult though :(

Thanks for the reply. I read the links and pages you provided in both links. Looks like some of the procedures are used with the Nissan Pathfinders with the "intelligent key". I don't have that sort of key. Just the regular key with the microchip in it.

When I went to see if the check service engine light soon was gone when I got the light to blinking I started the truck up fine, but the light was still on. So, I preceded with going through the steps of resetting the light. Could not get it to work. So, I just tried starting the truck up and that is when it would not start, the radio messed up, the battery, and brake light came on.

When it did that I unhooked the negative battery cable for about ten minutes and hooked it back up. The truck still did the same thing with not starting, the radio, and so on. No problem with steering wheel locking up and stuff like that. Now maybe when I connect the cable back up tomorrow I will have a issue like that.

I still think I really messed my great running pathfinder with low millage up "bad". Either I messed up the ecu or there is some procedure I am suppose to perform to get it back running.

Thanks,

brc

I have performed this ECU clear procedure and not gotten it right many times. From my understanding, you can't mess the truck up in this way. Look for another problem.

Did an initial search on Google for "nissan brake battery light clicking" and found a lot of dead battery/alternator answers. Do you have someone you can get a jump from?

Check your battery's voltage, too.

Thanks so much for the reply and looking up information on my problem. Battery has been working fine it even started up while I thought I had the code cleared. I will definitely check the battery out this morning. When it started clicking and not starting that was the first thing that came to mind. It made the clicking noise like the battery was just about dead. But when you went to start it up and it was making the clicking noise the radio was making a sound like it was trying to eject a cd or something, and would not play.

My 2008 has the factory built in screen above the radio. It displays gas millage, radio stations, and is where the back up camera displays its video. It also displays the radio volume. I tried turning the volume up on the radio and couldn't get any sound. All the correct gas millage totals and radio station was still displayed correctly on the screen.

I was thinking last night as to what in the world had gone wrong. It came to mind that maybe the security system had disabled the vehicle in some way.

I will start with checking the battery first. I have a battery charger with a jump off mode. My shop has two different bays. The one I have the Pathfinder in is the narrowest side. I could just jump it off but there is no way any battery cables would reach.

Thanks again for the reply and the info.

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. I feel so stupid. I pushed my Pathfinder out of the shop this morning and jumped it off with my 1994 Pathfinder. It started right up. I drove it about ten miles to build up the battery. I got it home killed the engine and it started right up with no warning lights. I have the battery on charge right now.

The newer vehicles and all of the electrical stuff they have scare me. I just knew I had messed up the ecu and I have no idea why the battery went dead b/c I wasn't out there very long trying to reset the ecu.

Thanks,

brc

I was going to say make sure you put the battery cable back on correctly. If it's too loose or doesn't have enough contact, you could starve the system of voltage and amps during cranking.

Also, you'll probably be better off just clearing future codes with a code reader. Or take it to autozone and have them do it.

It helped me very much to use a stopwatch while clearing the codes without a code reader. My phone has a stopwatch and I used that.
