I just bought the y pipe from racingline a few days ago and i took the old y pipe out and realized that on the old pipe there seems to be a extra half inch of piping coming out of the flange where it connects to the headers. The new y pipe doesnt.....i tried putting it on but it wouldn't fit properly from the front side.

Can anyone explain to me on how to install this y pipe correctly?

its hard to explain while typing but i hope you guys with the y pipe get a decent idea of what it is.

I installed my Y-pipe 100% by myseld, with the help of some jack stands and some air tools...

the y-pipe bolts up top your downpipes, not the headers... I'm guessing that's what you meant... but it should bolt right up perfectly, without any problems..

If I recall correctly,

1. Removed the old Y-pipe

2. I placed the new Y-pipe on the hanger

3. I bolted up the new y pipe to the down pipes (do not tighten completely)

4. I bolted up the rear of the Y-pipe to the cat back pipe for the exhaust.

If you still have issues doing them in this order, please take pictures and post them so we can walk you through the steps... but don NOT waste money taking it to a shop! Good luck!

Since there is no inner lip that extends from the flange on the RL y-pipe, you will need to use high temp rtv sealant where the two parts connect (someone correct me if I'm wrong). You can also use sealant and a replacement metal gasket.

alright so i decided to put it on tonight. It worked fine but I'm afraid there might be an air leak. I didn't feel any but when i drive it and hit the gas, I hear some kind of air noise.

Also, about that sealant, would it make that y pipe attach to the down pipe permanently?

Im also about to install my Y pipe...my kit came with 2 extra bolts, 2 extra nuts, and 2 extra washers in a plastic bag. It was my understanding that this was a simple swap out using OEM hardware. Anyone can give insight as to what the extra hardware is for?

Also curious about the sealant myself...

you're gonna need the bolts because the old ones dont fit right on the new Y-pipe. As for the leak, use sealant. i dont think it'd be stuck there permanently. but once you put the y-pipe in i dont see why you'd wanna take it out

Well thats kind of beat...if I need to replace the hardware they should have given me 8 bolts. Are the 2 they sent for just the cat-back pipe or something?

Nope, it may be a little harder to remove the y-pipe, but it can be done.

So I know its an old post but im just trying to see what is working better the sealant or gaskets? I have been hearing both so im just curious.

And were are you putting the sealant on the flange side of the y pipe? is that where I would put the gaskets if they are working?

I used a sealant on the flange of the Y pipe, a 1/16th bead if I remember right and no problems yet. Our main concern for leaks came from where the Y attaches up by the CAT's since there wasn't any gaskets, the exhaust pipe had a gasket. I used Permatex Ultra Copper High Temp RTV Silicone Gasket Maker
