Please help you guys, I don't know what caused this but my VH41DE in my '97 Q45 is having idle problems. Basically the problem is, when sitting idle at any time, the cars engine vibrates violently for like half a second- like it shakes the entire car. This happened out of no where about a month ago, and I still have not figured out what caused it. My friend said it is a misfiring fuel injector.

Does anyone know whats causing this? How much will repairs be at my local Infiniti dealership?

Thanks in advance.

Also off topic question: the two fans, in front of the radiator, do they only turn on when the car is REALLY hot?

It does sound like a misfire, but the cause may or may not be an injector. Could be an injector or a non-firing plug. Unfortunately it'll probably be fairly difficult to figure out unless it's investigated while it's acting up.

I believe the fans are both temperature controlled. The condenser fan may also be controlled by the AC system temp/pressure. I wouldn't think the engine would have to be "REALLY" hot, but define really hot.

^Thanks for the response, I never thought about the spark plugs.

I am pretty positive it could be spark plugs, because around the time the problem started acting up, my mom had taken the car to a VERY shady and unreliable repair shop and got the spark plugs and other stuff changed. I don't think they're platinum tipped either, which Infiniti said should be used.

I will definitely see into this, now I have two things to replace, the injector and spark plugs.

One of the absolute truths around here is that you must use factory-specified NGK platinum plugs. They are expensive, at around $8-12/each, but when you consider what it costs to change them, the best move is to spend the extra on the parts so you don't have to spend double on labor later.

About NGK sparkplugs;

Which one do I get? G-Power Platinum or Laser Platinum?

Also, where can I find them for the best price? Kragen is charging $18 a piece but I know for sure I can find them for cheaper.

Sorry for all the questions

Ok, looks like this person is having the EXACT same problem as mine.

zerothread?id=110262

It does look like it is all the shady autoshops fault.

For one, they changed the spark plugs and I am sure that he did not use NGK spark plugs, so that's what caused problem #1.

On top of that, he put TOO much coolant in my car. It is about a inch over the max line, and the guy said his car is giving off white exhaust too which = coolant.

Sigh.

Being 1" over the line won't cause the car to burn coolant, unless it spills out of the bottle and lands on something hot.

To be clear, a little white "smoke" in the exhaust is often normal, especially if the car's still warming up. Water condenses in the exhaust when you shut the car down, and it will steam out the next time you drive it until it's all gone. When it's really cold out the exhaust condenses as soon as it leaves the pipe, and you'll always see it when stopped at a light.

KS sensors need replacement!I bet you have a slight surge (hick-up) at very light throttle going a slight uphill (lugging the engine just before it downshifts in OD)Is so, KS are out of order! It will feel like a missfire!Missfire will set a MIL light in many cases (or store a DTC for a rendom misfire). Check the ECM/ECU for available DTC's.

Cheers!
