I know this is NICO , but while my s13 doesn't run i'm driving a '97 Cavalier (p.o.s.) and I need help quick. Anyways... i was driving home not too long ago and when i let off the gas going lets say, 60 or so, the speed drops really fast like it's still in 2nd gear. Does is sound like my transmission is screwed up?

Is the parking brake stuck on, and yes, if it's an auto transmission, it's probably doing the Darwinian two-step

man, I hate it when I leave the parking brake on and not notice...

well, on the T bird it's pretty easy being as it has no real effect on stopping the car....I gotta get in there and tighten it...

Nope... I've checked the parking brake already. I drove it this morning and sometimes it will shift fine and sometimes it will stay in 2nd gear.

its possible that a caliper may be siezed, look at al lthe brakes after driving it and see if any of them smell funny or are smoking

I haven't driven the 240 in over a year. I've been driving the cavalier.

240kid - It drops until it gets to zero m.p.h.

Actually, it makes plenty of sense. Calipers/Drums stick fairly often (just happened to my uncle 3 days ago) and while if it's a front, you'll feel a definite pull, a lesser sticking of a rear brake might not be so tell-tale to someone who isn't suspecting it.

um...

best advice I can give you is to never buy a front drive GM auto. ever.

I'd get the 240 running. It'll be cheaper then fixing the turd.

Lady...you have bad luck! If you get broken down on the side of the road in that car or something, give me a call. Same goes for when you put a new motor in the 240

Yeah I do have bad luck with cars. But it's not really my fault that these cars are bad. It's the previous owners. Aww you're sooo sweet for offering to come get me if I need someone to. Oh yeah I will definately need some help with the engine, cuz I don't wanna take it to someone. I wanna do it myself so I can learn.

so did you ever get it fixed

the reason i sway away from the caliper is that you said it sometimes stays in second, so that means the transmission isnt shifting

yeah... i strongly believe it's the transmission.

I'm in an automatic transmission class right now and it sounds like the band is tightened too much or something. For some reason it isn't getting out of 2nd gear.

First thing is first, CHECK THE transmission FLUID. Make sure its ok and then go from there.

They're out there I promise. Find the Daddy's girls. Well that is why I love cars so much. I remember going outside with my dad anytime he would work on the cars. To this day I still do that. That's where I learn everything. That and reading those confusing Chilton's!!
