Hello everyone, due to an unfortunate loss of my 1990 celica alltrac I decided to purchase a 300zx last November . I have yet to drive it because I have to get it in shape for the provincial inspection in Canada.here is my problem, after repairing a few items on this car I was finally near the end ,when I decided to clean the throttle bodies. I heated up the engine removed the intake tube and sprayed some throttle body cleaner,at the same time I revved the engine for it not to stall,.then it happened ... It sounded like a leak sprung in the exhaust system.then there was exhaust smoke coming from the driver side and a smell of rotten eggs. I have verified under the car and do hear the sound coming from the driver side exhaust .could it be the turbo, the gasket or the manifold gasket or worse , i will post a video with the sound it makes tomorrow.

I need all the feed back possible...

Thanks :squint:

sounds like it might be the cat to me, with the egg smell. thats where i would start. if you dont have emissions in canada then id just remove the cats anyways.

The problem is since I purchased the car in Ontario and brought it in to Quebec I have to have the car completely stock for this inspection.but the smoke how would it escape from the exhaust system.could a gasket have blown?i another thing I noticed .maybe I didn't notice it before but, the engine when running in normal load is quite hot,I had trouble touching the hood holder rod when I opened the hood.

First, our engines do get pretty damn hot even when running normally. Second, the egg smell definitely sounds like a cat problem... is the exhaust completely stock? TT models have precats attached to the turbos and then main cats on the actual pipes. It's possible the catalytic material (honeycomb stuff) broke loose inside from age? I mean spraying TB cleaner inside the engine will make tons of smoke come out the exhaust regardless, but it shouldn't have caused any kind of leak.

The exhaust system is stock, but before I cleaned the throttle body the engine was purring, when you introduce the cleaner in the body of course the engine starts to fail , so I gave gas to keep it from stalling,it sputtered roughly and then the noise changed some smoke, smell, then the noise like I had a hole in the exhaust. I verified under the car and the rough noise is coming from the drivers side turbo area.
I thank you for all the responses.

my best guess is that you flushed some carbon out of your top end and clogged your cat, OR.... a rust hole finally went all the way through. good luck.
