ok, i have a 1993 nissan 240sx hatch. it's got a s13 black top sr20det that is all stock.

i got it last week with a slight tick coming from the head. it got a little louder after i went drifting a couple of days ago.
best way i can describe the noise is like a baseball card in the spokes of a bike wheel.

my car idles at 2k cuz we had to turn the idle up for a little and the tick is from about 1500-3k rpm's just sitting still.
if i'm driving you don't hear it under 1500 or over 5k at all. if i'm at like 3k and let off the gas i don't hear it either. I don't hear it when i'm accelerating either.. it's only when i am holding a constant speed.

i took the valve cover off last night and removed the top timing chain guide just to see if it would make a difference. i also noticed the timing chain was able to move about 1/2 inch up and down.

all of my friends say it doesn't sound like rod knock it's more of just a click but loud....

a couple people told me to get a timing chain tensioner but i'm not sure if that's the problem?

PLEASE! any input would be GREATLY appreciated i'm stressin so hard over this lol :gotme

Your need to stick a tool up to you're ear and pinpoint the location of the ticking..... First thing that comes to mind is a lifter.

i'm ordering some RAS and getting a new timing chain tensioner today. It won't make the noise when i start it on a cold start tho? it's only when the engine is hot..
