Car: Fixing problems with my car!

Post

Got a redtop SR that has had some problems starting in the cold weather. Today it started, got up to about 900 rpm, then died. I tried to restart it but it would not turn over. I let it sit all day and still wouldn't start. Things I've checked:-Fuel pump is on-Battery has 12.3 volts-All of the harnesses (maf, ignitor, etc.)

Any suggestions would be helpful. Some friends said it could either be a maf problem or ignition problem. Also, this could be a long shot, but another friend of mine who was a former sentra owner said that the SR has some kind of cold start equipment and when the shop did the swap, they may have not installed it. There is no check engine light. Thank you very much in advance guys. I couldn't afford a winter car this year so this is my primary driver, so I really need it to run!

try holding the throttle to the floor and crank it. if its flooded ,after a bit of cranking it should fire up. your base idle may be to low and its choking on fuel. it needs more air in colder temps to fire since the fuel does not atomize as well.

I've just tried that and she still doesn't want to turn over. I'm not sure why she is being so stubborn. It the SR section, it seems like their are quit a few people having this problem, but no one has the answer to it. Thanks anyway. If you have any other suggestions, I'm completely open to them.

You said that the engine won't turn over, that says to me that there is a problem in your ignition circuit somewhere. If you meant that the motor wouldn't start, then I would check first for any vacuum leaks and make sure that all of your electrical connections are good. If that isn't the problem check your ignition timing. Take off the valve cover and make sure that the CAS is set properly (this is the first step in setting the initial timing anyway). While you have the valve cover and everything else off, check your plugs. If they are fouled replace them.

My problem with a similar thing turned out to be a combination of the fuel pressure regulator and the BOV. If you are using an atmospheric BOV change it to a recirculating type. Using an atmospheric BOV with an air metered system is bad. Everytime the BOV opens, you loose air that the computer has already calculated for, this creates a rich condition.

Trouble shoot it like any other engine, fuel/air/spark.

Good Luck

Thanks a lot bud. I am going to check that out and hopefully that will help. It seems a lot of people on the SR section have been having the same problem now with the cold weather, and many have suggested making sure the timing is correct so I will definatly look into that. Also, a lot of others say it could be a faulty maf-could this be something to check out? I have a friend who has an extra laying around so maybe I'll swap it out and see what happens. Thanks again for the input.

when you state a car does not turn over ,that typically means the engine does not crank. where as you are stating it turns over but it does not start. right?

Correct, it will crank but doesn't fire up. Still putting together a few more ideas. Seeing as I have the day off work tomorrow, I think I will wrench on it then. Hope I have some luck.

My apologies for Hijacking this thread. :(

Nistech, I am a new 240 owner and this is the only way I am able to start my car when it's cold. It happens only the first time and only after having sat for hours. Could you please explain this a little more? Let me add I know little about cars, sorry.

Does it hurt the car to throttle it in such a way? Mine certainly feels flooded as you described. How can the "base idle" be adjusted and does this have anything to do with the reg. temp idle? My car, when warm idles nearly perfect and does not even have the infamous 240 shake.

Thanks so much.
