this whole story below just leads up to the fact that i have issues with my timing and that i can't figure out what the problem is... anyhow so if you don't feel like reading all of what i have done and seen and just want to know the problem skip down to the area with a bunch of stars (***)
so i recently posted up some things about timing issues i have had, but now they've gotten worse and i need help.previously i had set the timing (before turboing the car) to what i thought was good... the power was great and it didn't knock, so i figured i had it right... but then i got a lot more conscious of the lack of precision in my timing adjustments after i put the turbo on because i don't want to blow up my engine.i readjusted the idle on the car because after the turbo was broken in it spun like mad at idle and the idle was kicked up a little bit. after doing this i decided i should redo the timing because i was afraid it may be too advanced. anyway so when i went to do it i followed the normal procedure of warming the car up revving it and what not than turning it off and unplugging the tps, then starting it, revving it a few times and then doing the timing at idle.when i then checked the idle, to my horror, it was WAY advanced, at least according to my timing marks. the timing light i have does not have onboard adjustments, so the timing you see is actual... not that this really matters, as long as you know what you're doing.
anyhow so i decided to then turn the timing back a bunch, down to what is normally 20 degrees btdc. i then took the car for a test drive. there was a small noticeable difference in power (a little less power...slower car), but what really got my attention was the fact that i was running extremely rich, and when i shifted to 3rd and stepped on the gas the car backfired (out the exhaust, not a true backfire) 3 times the loudest it has ever before. so i came to the conclusion that all the excessive gasoline had combusted (obviously). at this point i turned around and went back home to recheck the timing to make sure i was not an idiot....
**************at this point i have checked the timing a bunch of times, night and day and i can't figure out the problem. here's what is going on: when i check the timing i can see the 3 distinct timing marks and 3 others that are kind of faded a little (or maybe dirty) but they are definitly there. so the timing marks range from 5 degrees atdc up to 20 degrees btdc. if i try to turn the timing back as far as possible (by rotating the distributor) it will only go down as far as 10 degrees btdc... that's right, not a typo before top dead center... i can't even adjust the timing to zero, or any degree after tdc. i know that this has to be wrong somehow... the car runs great and makes power and it never pings or has any problems... the timing reading has to be off somehow because if i adjust it past the 20 degree mark it keeps getting more and more power. the other thing is that as i adjust the timing more and more advanced the car doesn't run as rich, indicating that it is burning more completely... but i am afraid to just "wing it" and guesstimate where the real 20 degrees btdc is because i don't want to risk blowing up the engine...
anyhow so please help me with this.... i really don't know what to do and i'm reluctant to even turn the timing back to as far advaned as it was before i started backfiring and running crazy rich as i am afraid of what i might do to the engine. by the way if you were wondering what setup i have here it is: 8 psi straight t3 turbo running on a rrfpr (fmu) and a walbro pump with a front mount and a full exhaust. i have a somewhat inaccurate air fuel gauge (but it is definitely accurate enough for me to tell when it's running significantly different as it is right now) and a boost gauge.
