We have a '92 Q45. There is a dreadful gas smell, which we traced to the trunk, and found that gas was leaking out of the fuel neck. (Yes, we had some work done on the car, and the mechanic did not replace the O ring.) Ergo, we ordered a new O ring and will replace it ourselves.

We found the '94 manual and have the torque requirements, but are there any other tricks or hints or tips you brilliant people can provide? We are hoping we can remove the neck without the ventilation pipe...correct? (If not, we'll have to order an O ring for that, too, I guess.)

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: We are having trouble finding the proper torque wrenches. Does anyone have any advice?

Was the "work" a fuel pump replacement? If so, you must use a new O ring. Never have heard of any filler leaking. Are you speaking of the O ring on the cap (if there is one)?

The mechanic dropped the fuel ... tank? (I will confess, my Dad takes care of this business.)

It would be the o ring that is on the filler neck. That is where the leak is occurring.

Anyone? Also, if the bolts are stripped, do I have to order new ones from Infiniti, or can I use ones from the automotive store?

Welcome to NICO! Unfortunately, I'm at the office. When I get home, I will snap a picture of a fuel tank and filler neck. I just happened to have an extra sitting in my workshop -- "ya know" for those special occasions.. LOL

I have had some good success finding replacement bolts/nuts that exactly match the thread pitch used by Nissan at my neighborhood Ace hardware. Always take the old nut or bolt so you can personally verify the match. Sometimes if I catch Ace out of stock, there is a True Value about 20 miles away with an incredible bolt/nut/screw inventory. If that place doesn’t have it, you probably don't need it..

BTW – I discovered the Ace hardware source for bolts during a timing chain job. I would have never thought to look at my neighborhood hardware store for a Nissan bolt until our OEM parts supplier indicated Nissan no longer offered a particular bolt I needed in that job. The supplier said, “just take the old bolt to a local hardware and get a new one there cause it’s not worth stocking or trying to order something from Japan that is so easily found in a full service hardware store.” I took their advice and moved on to the next challenge.

Thanks OwnerCS.

Do you think there is enough play in the neck to be able to remove it without also removing the ventilation pipe?

On the fuel tank I have from a 94 model, the filler neck and the pipe are all one unit. The filler neck and the pipe connect to the fuel tank. There is a large o-ring (looks more like a gasket to me) for the filler neck and a small o-ring for the pipe. From looking at mine, the bolts appear to be a relatively common type for securing parts to the body metal. The bolts should be used on many Nissans in the year range. The gas tank I have was apparently removed as one piece. I'm running late for a meeting, I will post pictures later tonight.
