Im writing a paper for my engines class comparing the reciprocating engine and the Wankel rotary engine.

anyways..... If the wankel only uses a few parts, is so small, so light, and so cheap to produce, why is it only used in the mazda rotary experiments?

Exaust gas heat and emissions would be my guess.

they're also finicky to get working right. they're not the easiest engines to work on and not the most reliable. its a great concept, but it needs lots more refinement. and mazda is the only one still using them, but lots of other companies had them, even nissan.

RELIABILITY. The heat was the major problem with the 3rd Gen RX. Jump over to http://www.rx7club.com

Along with the article the other guys posted, these guys are the experts with the Wankle. Good group over there.

Yeah from what I heard. I think it was suppose to be coolent leaks into the rotors caused by the excessive heat ( I could be incorrect on that). The turbo didnt have nearly as many problems until they slapped that twin up on the 13b-rew and just jacked the heat level up from the insane temp it already was.

Saw one guy on the rx7club that swapped a red top sr20 in his GXL. Took care of his reliablity issues.
