Hello,

i'm not sure if this is the place to post your technical questions, but i need help with my 2001 infiniti i30

I bought it at an auction 2 days ago. It drove home just fine yesterday, and also i took it to the store. On the way back from the store however, riiiiiight as i got to my drive way (i parked on a slightly uphill slant), my engine seemed to die. Or as i read, when it went into idle, it died.

I am by no means car-savvy, just a single mom who got a good deal on a decent looking car.

I read somewhere on this site that a few other people had issues like that also.

This morning i went out to go start it and the engine started up beautifully, but when it goes to "calm down" (aka...as soon as i release the key) its off.

Please tell me its an inexpensive fix!

Some things i gathered from this site is that its most likely the IACV or AAC Valve. And if thats bad it fries my ECU (or something like that...some..computer chip or something gets fried..i'm not sure anymore. )

Can you please explain to me perhaps the steps to take as if i were a baby lol thank you.

..also could this be because:

-circuit board found dry solder joints?
-upper phlenum gasket thats leaking?
-needs new spark plugs?

these were suggestions that i had saw from others on this page to problems that seemed similar to mine.

Diagnosing mechanical problems over the internet is tricky at best. What are the odds you bought a hurricane sandy waterlogged vehicle?

Although I'm not a huge fan of Carfax, in this case I think it might be worth paying for.

Do you have a local Infiniti dealership? You can take it to them to see what car history they can pull from your car's VIN. if another Infiniti Shop has worked on these problems before, there should be a record of it, and it may possibly be under warranty.

I live in KY but bought the car at a Clark County Auction (Indiana)- the chance of it being a waterlogged sandy car is slim, then again i dont even know how many previous owners it had so who knows. My step dad, when we first bought it, was thrilled at how beautiful the engine sounded. And the vehicle even has its original battery.
I have to save what money I have to probably put it in this car for reparations.

I will look and see if theres an infiniti dealer in the area. As of right now though, when i start it, it still sounds fine and the rpm gage moves when i step on the gas (as it is in park) but as soon as i let go of the gas, it quietly shuts off. Like a stubborn teenager lol

i rented a diagnostic scan handheld machine thingy and the codes were:

P0430 "Catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 2"

P0740 "Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit open 1 confirmed + also one pending"

now this tells me absolutely nothing...but im happy to see its not a million things!

On a scale 1 to 10, one being "do it with your eyes closed" and 10 being "set your car on fire now" - where would you rank these reparations? Cost? How to fix? Any insight would be helpful please! :)

Cross-posting (i.e. post the same message in more than one forum board) is frowned upon. It's confusing, counterproductive, and some even consider it rude. Please choose the forum topic that is closest to your post, and place it there only. If you should create a post in one forum, and later realize it would be more appropriate in another forum, please delete the original before posting it again. :)
