The thread is located here:

Rattling and Tapping

The car had its timing chain done not 5k miles ago, and everything with regards to it is in place and fine.

I only notice this sound when I lightly get on the gas to maintain cruising speed. There seems to be no loss in power or driveability.

I'll post any extra info you may need at your request.

Thanks,

lbrowne

your description sounds like a rod or main bearing knock that typically occurs off idle. but will gradually fade away if held at a constant off idle.

Does this mean the motor is kaput soon? she still pulls like a champ.

edit: the car does not make this sound at idle speeds, but stays constant when held at certain rpm.

thanks,

just from the way you describe it it sounds like a main bearing knock. You could get away with just doing the bearings.

Thanks for your help. How hard/long of a job to do the bearings?

Plus, as the car sits right now, how much time before she shuts down if I can not do the work yet....

You pull the trans out then drop the oil pan and you can unbolt every thing to drop the crank besure to note location and direction of caps. inspect the crank journals for any signs of wear if ok you can throw a new set of bearings in. the crank will have the grade bearing to use for each journal stamped into the front crank lobe.

well i have the same problem with my 93' 240sx hatchback. I hear a rattling sound around 2,000 - 3,000 rpm and it fades away after that while driving. It just occurs when im first accelerating to that rpm range buh when im maintaining the speed around those rpms i dont hear any rattling sound. I use a auto transmission by the way. Based on what you guys said, its the bearings right? Because if it is the price to fix that isnt very high, under 20 dollars for the complete set of bearings for the ka24de. So that shouldn't be much of a problem so I hope its just the bearings. If its the connecting rods then thats about 100 dollars or a bit lower than that. Are you guys sure its the bearing or the rods?
