Found this thread while on a MBZ forum I frequent:

"Infiniti forum...

I surfed onto a Nissan/Infiniti forum this evening. Wow. Running a W140 is expensive? A 1990-1994 Q45 can sure be a money pit!

Before anyone gripes about their 10-12 year old MB again, they should check out some of the other marques forums. It's durned enlightening..."

Let me tell you...a W140 MBZ is WAYYYYY more of a RPIA to take care of. My boss has one and although it is quite a nice ride, it's ridiculous how many electrical problems that this car has! Not to mention the expensive and frequent failure AC evaporators that cost major $$$$ to fix.

I do agree that a pre 90 Q can be a liability if not taken care of, but then again what sophisticated car isn't?

I simply can't let these people get away with perpetrating such ignorance - for those of you who don't know I own a 92 400e myself and thought it is a good car, if I were to do it over again I would have gotten another Q!

I was about to post a reaction to this thread but I thought I should first, cool off a bit, and second, get some other opinions from you guys.

The more foreign a car is and the less sold annually the more the replacement parts cost! There is a duty on import automobile parts made outside of NAFTA.Lexus compressor, evaporators are more expensive than Q, same with HVAC controller, and instrument cluster and rebuilt transmission.....plus many suspension parts but the LS shocks are cheaper.

a friend of mine owns a 1991 300e.

the cost to get a used engine for him is around $1500.

For my 91 q45, its around $2500.

My car is finer though.

I guess what made me react was that these MBZ owners are down on Infinitis and I believe that Infiniti makes a much more trouble free product. I feel that it is ignorant and or misleading to say or imply that a Mercedes is a cheaper, more trouble free car to own, especially the W140!

I think it's great they think that. I say, let them continue chasing the esteemed Beverly Hillbillies marques. Less competition for us means lower prices for us.

What does the price of an 180 HP inline 6 cylinder engine [300E] have to do with a performance V8 engine.

We can buy junkyard I4 for $500 and V6 Es300/camary for $1200-1500........Aluminum V8 are always over $2000...........duh!

Mercedes owner just like Infiniti owners almost never keep the car to as new oem specs.A MB independent near my home has a junk car pile 15 times greater than we do at least 35 cars sitting there waiting for years for owner to pay repair bills.......it will cost him more in legal fees to take title than the junkers are worth!

But he is only looking for a 12 valve per cyl , 6 cyl engine. You aer looking at a 32 valve V8 w/ VVT.Costs several times as much to make, as a MB six.

Argueing with guys like this is like wrestling with a pig; you can't win, you get covered with pig poop and the pig likes it.

Yes, they are a nice group overall and the forum is very informative. I didn't realize that people from that forum would end up seeing this thread!

Oh well some people could become really fanatical about things. Love is blind they say ;)

but mercedesshop.com is pretty damn reasonable compared to some other forums ;) One person posted that he raced an S500 with a Maxima and won. He would've got many irrational flames if he had posted elsewhere i'm sure..

I am the only one in my family who still drives a German car. My dad now has a Nissan Cefiro 3.0GV and a Toyota Camry. Maybe one day i'll see the light hehehe...

He was once all about Euro cars. But things changed after our last Benz (92 230E) started to break apart.. part by part. I guess that was down to the lack of use. However it wasn't too great a car to be honest. Slow, and it had terrible A/C (even my 20yr old 300CD seems to have better A/C)

Maybe it was a bad example? However right now I'm looking for another W124 - The 500E namely.

Oh well - there's a car for everyone! Just keep 'em running.

I might look around as my dad needs help with lighting (he thinks the headlights really suck)
