1989 240sx coupe :

Ok im planning to buy a 89 240sx coupe from a friend this guy is chinese. Ok, well the car was running, know this seen him drive it to pick my bro up. I heard that the car had some electrical problem. So, he took it to futureshop to get it checked out and they stated it was the starter, he purchased a brand new starter and putted it in, but all he gets now is just a car struggling to turnover. Example when ur battery is like almost dead and your trying to start it all u get is a stuggleing car. Can someone please help me! He is selling it for 500$ with megan cat back, and strut bar, and the engine is a ka24e.

check the voltage on the battery, it should be over 13.5 volts or soo, soulds like a poor ground from the motor, or a sh!tty led to the battery, clean the poles ont the battery to, this should help, also try turning the motor over wih a 27mm socket, and a breaker bar. rock the sohc!!!

Well not to sure if it is the wrong or corrct starter, but could it be a valved droped in or something with the piston. Because he tells me people tell him that its either harness, piston, electrical, or engine problem, but im thinking cant be the engine since the car isnt turning over properly so there would be no chance for the car to start.

Well a seized motor sure won't turn over but im sure it an easier fix than that, but if you wan't to know for sure do as Jackask89nissan suggested and turn the motor by hand, if it cycles it not seized and if it binds then yeah there are problems.

Not to familiar with this technique. Where exactly would i turn it from? Also he says that its not binded, lol, it cycles through but struggles, sound like it isnnt geting enough power sound like this but way more sluggish http://youtube.com/watch?v=vMHQe_KTr7U#. He also said that when he got the problem, he was driving one night when he was driving it everything lost power, no throttle response and the car died. So he took it to futureshop and they said it was the starter so he put one in and it drove home. So he left it running at home and it ran for about 1/2 hours and it just stopped. He took it back to a shop they wanted 75/hr to diagnose it he said f*** it and bought another 240sx.

You put a 27mm socket onto the crank pulley and use an extender bar to manualy turn the engine, it makes the crank/ pulleys/ cams etc... go through their motions so you can tell if the motor is siezed or not, if everything is fine it will turn as much as you want, if a valve is banging against a piston as you suggested the motor will bind. You might need to jack up the front of the car to get at the crank pulley, i've never done it on a KAe but on the KAde there wasn't much room.

edit: the crank pulley is at the bottom of the engine in the centre.

I missed the part where you said it does cycle, but for future reference you would put a socket on the 27mm nut on the crank pulley and just pretend you are tightening the nut, thats what people mean when they say cycle manualy. The problem does sound electrial now I would disconnect and clean the battery posts and clamps first then try starting it, if it dosen't work try using jumper cables, if it starts then you have a battery/ battery grounding issue. If it starts but dies after you remove the jumper cables the altenator is probally broken and not charging the battery. Let us know what you find out
