Hey guys. I just bought a 1996 300zx for $1000 but it has some problems. The oil pressure gauge will show around 30 pounds of pressure at the most and thats when im going about 75 mph. It takes about 5 seconds for the car to speed up with my foot all the way down on the gas at stops. And it makes this loud whining/whirring noise. The gas light comes on when there is a quarter of a tank still. If someone could point me in the right direction to these problems it would be greatly appreciated. also the car runs fine and idles fun. And the guy I bought the car from said the compression could be low because it needs an oil pump. And i also heard that an oil pump may whine when it starts to go bad? Thanks Blake

Your confusing two things. Compression is the amount of pressure a particular cylinder is capable of producing. A compression test is used to diagnose wether or not the engine has piston ring damage. You test each individual cylinder by putting a pressure gauge in place of a spark plug and turning the engine over with ignition and fuel disabled. A compression check at 75mph just sounds dangerouse and irresponsible. Haha. Anyway the gauge in the car is probably oil pressure. Find the factory specs and compare it to what your gauge reads. The older the engine gets the looser the internals fit, so it's common for an engine with 200k on it to have slightly low oil pressure. The whinning noise could be a timing belt thats too tight. If the guy had it replaced recently then thats probably what happened. The tech overtightened the timing belt. Also those cars are famous for the injector connectors corroding over causing a misfire. The fix here would be new injector connectors and possibly new injectors. A misfire or two will surely cause poor acceleration. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the correction Carmo. The belt has not been replaced, and it actually has a new harness with new connectors. The car does not misfire either.
