Post

I am new to NICO and a proud owner of a *new* 2010 3.5SR V6 Altima Coupe that I recently purchased from a dealer.

When I go from a stop to approx 10mph, there is a loud, almost brushing-type sound from the transmission somewhere as if there is something in the way of the 'gear adjusting' (it is not the doors locking). This occurs on a daily basis (actually, every time I initially start my car - once it has been going, it ceases to make the sound). I am worried that there may be an issue with the CVT...

Does anyone know what type/style of CVT is in my car? I would like to try and troubleshoot this with out going to the dealer, if possible.

Does anyone else have this problem? There are only 1000 mi on my baby...

Thanks in advance!

I do love this car though!!!!

your best bet is to take it to the dealership. It's still under warranty. You don't wanna mess with it, mess something up, and then have them void your warranty.

I also have a 3.5 coupe but i have the 6 spd transmission. Whenever i start up my car, put it in first and go, just like youre car around 10 mph i get that "grinding" sound. I dont think its anything major but it is quite annoying. Take it to the dealership would be my suggestion

Take to dealer-still under warranty. You may be doing more damage the longer you wait.

Best bet is to always have the dealer double check, but as a fellow 3.5SR CVT owner - I happened to troubleshoot a similar startup sound, and it was only the ABS self check that the vehicle does every start up after it has sat parked for a while. There is a thread somewhere with more detail.

It's a low tinny noise, and it only occurs once after you exceed ~5-15mph.

Wow, I've got the same thing on my car and I've only owned it two weeks (brand new). Before I saw your thread, I thought that I was hearing things. Now that others have suggested calling the dealer, I think I'll do that. Hope your problem gets solved but I'm glad you needed help as it will help me too.

If it is the ABS self-check then its normal operation. So I won't worry too much.

That sound is definitely the ABS self check. Every Nissan does that. You're good to go! I know I freaked out initially when I first heard it in my Sentra. It's done that in my Sentra and all three of the Altimas that I've had.

Worry not, and welcome to NICO!

Thanks, all! I am surprised that there is a mechanism that would make a sound during ABS self-checking. With all of the advancements mechanically/electrically, you'd think that would be something the engineers would have taken care of...LOL

@perfect circle - thanks for the link!

I called the dealer today about it and as others have pointed out it is an ABS self-actuator (self-check). He also said that is now mandated on all new cars since 2010. That could be why others with older Nissans haven't mentioned it. Anyway, I'm more at ease after talking with the dealer.
