Its a 1990 240 sohc. Problem is that its shooting lots of black smoke out the back. The car idles at about 500 to 600 and after a while it dies. Its my daily driver and i need to fix it quick

Thats not gonna help a lot, start by giving more details...

Idles fine when cold? shuts down on park? or while driving? Hot? any sputtering? how does it accel if u accel it? go deep into details...

Tips to start: check fuses, any blown ones? any melting ones? any fuse getting REALLY hot? fuel pump is working? fuel filter changed?, any fluids falling on floor when its on?

:P you gotta go deep into details...

alright man. check it. i crank the car and it turns on i just changed the fuel pump to the 255lh walbro. When i used to drive the car before i would be driving freeway and suddenly i would get loss of power to the engine. it felt like i had no gas going into the engine. i changed the pump and it seems to work.

Now i get a lot of black smoke and sputtering out of the tail pipe. The car sounds like it wants to die out at all times. when the car is in neutral it idles at about 500 to 600 rpms and when i put it into first it all of a sudden has the big tendancy to want to die out. rpms drop to about 100 to 200 and eventually dies.

this happens when i first turn the car on for the first time and after it has been running for a little while. Does black smoke indicate that the car is burning oil? if so in which way is it burning it? All my fuses seem to check ok and non look burned.

i hope its not the internal engine itself. i dont have money for a swap and any direction of advice would help.

if you need any more info let me know thanks.

the fuel pump is to big for what you have, It is suppling way more fuel than you need for a stock sohc, that is step one start there. the black smoke is most likely because of this, because I am not there I can't say otherwise

HMmm suposedly u can use a walbro on our engine, but if the fuel regulator is shot, ur gonna flood the engine in fuel.

BTW, i had that same idle, engine shutting problem. Turned out to be my Crankshaft position sensor (the distribuitor has 4 cables comming out from below it, theres a sensor in there) if u can get a distribuitor and change urs ull see if its that..

The last distribuitor i had made my car have erratic idle, and dying, if i accelerated it it would misfire a lot and smoke a lot. Sooo try that, if not check fuel pressure maybe ull flooding it.

How do you check fuel pressure?
