At this price point I might be inclined to purchase one.

Depends which one you buy. The useless "arcade" version with no hard drive is $199. The "standard" mid-range model (60gb hdd) goes for $299 (will be $249). And the Elite (black, with 120gb hdd) is $399.

I wouldn't consider the arcade useless - for those that get the RRoD on their old boxes, they can just keep their hdd's and buy the arcade to hopefully get a Jasper version of the 360.

That is a good point. I never thought of that (mainly because I'd never replace my attractive black elite with the homogenized looking white of the lesser boxes).

^ ....my Xbox is green with envy (halo3 SE)

If the arcade were to sell for $149 imagine, that's a cheap media extender or netflix box, the only downside is that it would be a wired. If I were a betting man the Arcade would sell for $179.

There are actually a couple of other options right now as well. If you can find a 20GB version, you can pick one up for $259. Doubtful it will be a Jasper though. The arcade models are still the best bet AKAIK. But also, if you are not hard up for a Black 360, then you can pick up an Arcade model for $199 and a 120 GB HDD for $149 and you'll come in with a little more than a $50 savings over an Elite and have the same specs. If you want to hook up through HDMI though, you will need to buy an HDMI cable. In addition to this, if you need to hook up the sound outside of HDMI, then you'll need the adapter. For just HDMI though, you can get a cable pretty cheap through monoprice.

I forgot about the old 20GB models still being out there. You can also get an XBL/HDD combo right now that comes with 3 months of XBL Gold and a 20GB hdd for $29. The HDD is refurbished, but $30 for 20GB beats the SNOT out of $50 for the 512MB Memory Unit that Arcade owners would otherwise be relegated to.

I actually want to pick up another 120GB HDD. I moved the one from my Elite to the GF's 360 to ensure we wouldn't run out of room for Rock Band songs (the game is hers). So now I'm stuck with the 20GB, which was fine until they implemented the ability to store games on the HDD. Not a big enough deal to want to spend $150 on, but I'll be keeping my eye out for a really good deal on one.

As for the memory unit, I think I recall reading on anandtech's article about the Jasper that there is 512MB built-in memory to eliminate the need to include the separate card with the arcade models. Not sure if the prop or elite will include the chip or not.

It seems like the price drop is immanent. I just saw Best Buy's Sunday ad, they had a free $50 gift card and your choice of Guitar Hero w/ wireless guitar for $399. They always do this before a price drop, this way consumers who purchase the PS3 now with these extra goodies won't feel so bad when the price drops in the next few weeks. Plus they can't get a price match since they got a packaged deal.

Well, I purchased my PS3 in September of last year. I wasn't going to wait until April '09 to get it at the price drop. That's a good reason to grab the PS3 if you don't own one right now.

For the price drop, is that the 120gb version?

The problem for me is that even 3 years into the system's lifespan, there is only ONE PS3 exclusive game I want to play, and I can survive without it. The PS3's price is not the sole issue. Certainly at $299 it would be more tempting, but I'm not going to buy a console that won't get any use for ANY price.

I am on thesame boat as you, I want to get a PS3 especially for $299. But the lack of games is really making me think twice. The only game I was looking forward to was Gran Turismo, but that game is MIA. (prolouge can kiss my behind)
