My M35 (VQ35DE) is coming due for plug change. I know from my service maual CD that I need NGK PLFR5A-11 plugs but I'm seeing NGK 'platinum' and NGK 'iridium' plugs with this model# and I'm wondering if anyone has knowledge as to which is the better choice? My CD specifies "platinum-tipped type" but no mention of iridium. Is this possibly a newer, improved version?

I changed my plugs at 100K and replaced them with the platinum plugs. The originals looked pretty good after a 100K and the car ran well with them, so why mess with success. I'm sure the iridiums will work fine but what are you gaining?
I have replaced iridium plugs on my other cars with iridiums only because that was original equipment. Iridium is 10 times harder than platinum and can tolerate higher temps, but both plugs will last for a 100K miles

Thanks Thomas, for responding. I'm with you mate, never mess with what works great. The car is running perfectly fine but pushing 80k miles and Sept is always a slow month for my business, so I'm going to change them out while I have the extra free time. Aside from higher temp handling and a few dollars extra, I couldn't find any real difference so I'm going to stick with the OEM platinums as well.

I went with iridium...I changed at about 76K.....I simply bought it because I heard they were better and I had a coupon code for 20% off....actually it still works....you should order from advance auto parts...and use code P20....just used it today actually...

when I changed out my plugs, I stayed with the NGK platinums...no issues....while you're changing the plugs, it's a good idea to also inspect the coils for their durability...bad coils can cause a lot of issues.

It's always good to hear fellow M owners taking care of their rides....peace of mind is important!! :dblthumb:

I just changed mine at 84,000 and used the OEM platinums.
Don't notice any differences in how car drives.
#8 and #7 were a little bit of a b*tch to get out--had to use two universal adaptors and an additional short extension to maneuver them out.
Passenger side took a little longer too-seemed like there was less room compared to driver side.

NGK Platinums are what I have used for Infiniti (Nissan) engines in the past ... :yesnod The OEM plugs are good.

As a side note (which I realize you did not ask about!) ... just be careful to avoid Bosch. They make excellent plugs, but for some reason, they do not like to play well with Nissan engines. :squint: Too many horror stories for me to want to ever consider that.

You're right. I didn't ask about any pther brand because on this forum I've also read stories about other brands and I remember others like yourself reporting that some brands do not work well with our engines. I was going to add to my original post 'do NOT tell me about other brands', but being a proper brit, I felt it to be harsh to say when asking for help, LOL. Thanks for your help, and thanks for reminding everbody about the dangers of changing the OEM parts to some other brand. We don't drive cheap cars and they aren't cheap to maintain - we need to remember that when we repair or upgrade. Advise from people like you, Steve The Tech, and others is highly appreciated.
