Has anyone else had this problem? When I first got the car, moving the shifter knob from park to Reverse or Drive was extremely tight and difficult. I realized the plastic "cover" under the P-R-N-D plate was warped, causing the plastic to sometimes catch on the jagged grooves of the design of the plate. I could think of no other choice but to remove the protective plastic plate completely with the help of some needle nose pliers and cutters. It is now completely free and smooth, but I don't like having the "innards" exposed. I don't eat or smoke in the car, but there is always the possibility of something falling into the exposed crevace that has me a bit worried. I wouldn't want a major repair due to some loose change falling in. I asked my local Nissan dealership about it, but they seemed lost and referred me to my nearest Infiniti dealer (about 50+ miles away). The car was origionally from Texas - perhaps it was parked outside in the Texas sunshine too much, causing the plastic to become soft and warp??? Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

oh and my theory that it warped is probably because of the cars heating ducts. im sure they travel from the front to the rear via under the center console.

as heat passes through, it heats up all tho areas and components.

try feeling your cupholders next time or something in the path.

goodluck!

Im willing to put money on that the last owner had change or something similar fall in there and when they took it out tweaked that piece just enough to do that.Ive seen it more than a dozen times with Audis.Oh and you'll be really lucky to have them replace it under warranty, it will be outside influence and not a parts defect.AND one more thing, Im pretty sure that that part is part of that whole shifter gate assembly, meaning its not going to be cheap or in stock.Good luck

It is not available on its own I am 99.9% sure about that... I want to check my parts system and post all the info monday when I am in the office...

see what other parts could be missing down there that could be letting heat up from under the car...

Thank you for your thoughts on this. I realize that it would not be just some part I could order from Pepboys or anything...lol...but maybe I can fabricate some kind of black leather "boot" to cover the entire assembly (Might give it a sporty manual look as well). Another option would be to acquire that part from a salvage yard of another comparable Nissan or Infiniti. In the meantime, I will just be careful with what items pass over it's airspace.

I am thinking that this boot (next to the red) could be tourn which is allowing hot air up to melt that part...

As far as the part its self... to replace... beleive it or not, the slider IS available seperately!

it is very inexpensive...

Clutch - You are DA MAN!

Thank you for taking the time to research this for me - as far as I can see, the immediate parts that I would need would be 96932X and 96932XA (The slider assembly). Would I just contact my nearest Infiniti dealer for this part, or is there a way to call the 800 number?

Not sure if this would have been caused simply by heating vents...anything is possible of course, but since the car did spend it's first few years in Texas, I am thinking it may have spent a lot of time with the sunshine beating down on it. I know I spent the first few days using clay bar and waxing because it had the roughest finish I had ever felt on a car before. (But now it's smooth as silk )

It is going to be nice to get the proper fit and finish look to the interior as well as having it protected

Clutchkick - Just got the parts in the mail when I got home from work today that I needed, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

I will install it tomorrow on my lunchbreak, but probably won't post any pics since it will look "normal" like everyone else's...lol

Anyway, thanks again for researching these parts for me, and for getting them to me so quickly! I will definitely keep you in mind for any stock Infiniti parts I may need in the future.

Sweet! Glad you got them quickly...

Hopefully the install goes smoothly!

Check the rubber boots under the shifter before you put the new parts on...
