Plastic piece around battery

When I installed a new battery, I found this plastic piece was not in a good shape so I took it out. I have no idea what purpose of this piece is. There are two square shaped metal pieces, one on the short side the other on the long side of the plastic piece.

Yep that is what I thought you were talking about, its not really necessary its just a cover that fits around the battery.

But you can buy a new one if you are so inclined

No I will not buy another one, but wonder why two thick metal pieces are on there.

The plastic surround is there to capture acid fumes or Hydrogen outgassing from the battery and vent the fumes away from corrosion sensitive parts.
