Was curious if my Y33 4.1 V8 engine cover performs any function beyond decoration and a bit of sound deadening. I'm thinking of removing it.

I like the sound of the engine and wouldn't mind it being a bit louder. Plus it would make working on it less of a hastle. And wouldn't it keep the engine a bit cooler?

My biggest concern is if the plastic engine cover is protecting the engine from water/wind exposure in some way. What do you guys think?

I think that on most vehicles, it's decorative.

It is a facade - Something that hides an aesthetically unpleasing arrangement of unfinished or poorly-finished engine parts.

It also discourages DIY maintenance and repairs, by making engine parts less visible, and harder to access.

If you're talking about the top cover... it's probably there for looks. The road shield under the car is very important for protecting the engine, and air flow.
