I plan on purchasing an s13 240sx (USDM) and doing a red-top sr20det swap. I've finally decided on a goal for the car after doing a bit of research. I am still undecided on the best (or perhaps cheapest?) way to go about reaching my goal.

Basically I want to get 300+ whp out of the car. I realize that this will require a new turbo, FMIC, injectors, fuel pump, some sort of engine management, boost controller, z32 MAF, and all the intake/intercooler piping and whatnot... (is there anything I'm forgetting or missing?)

So basically I guess I'm wondering what the cheapest way is to get there. I was thinking about getting a GT28RS ("potato turbo") and going from there with a completely custom fabricated setup... Or would it be cheaper to go with a pre-fabricated kit for what I consider a fairly modest build-up?

Basically my goal is a strong setup, but it doesn't need to be overkill for future building or anything because I just plan on maybe some bolt-ons in the future (after the initial setup) such as cams, etc...

Thanks in advance...

EDIT: Oh yeah, also, how about the transmission...what kind of clutch and/or flywheel will I need for the increased power?

i dont have much experience with turbo engines, but along with all of the stuff you have listed, getting your ecu recalibrated by someone like jim wolf technology will help. the disco potato, from what i have read, is an exelent turbo. quick spooling, high performance. you should check out sport compact car and see what they did, its pretty much the same as you are doing. you can read the articles at sportcompactcarweb.com, go to project cars then project silvia. i wish i could tell you more, but thats about all i know having to do with turbo setups.

The GT28RS is an expensive turbo. If you're looking for a cheaper BB turbo, the GT25R is a good choice and a T3/T4 combo is probably even cheaper.

You will need to upgrade your FMIC, recirc valve, fuel pump, and MAF. The stock injectors should hold close to 300 WHP IIRC (somebody correct me on that if I'm wrong). I personally think that a FMIC kit is too expensive, so My suggestion is that if you can weld, make your own IC piping and try to locate the FMIC higher. It reduces turbo lag a bit and aids in the sleeper look cause you don't have that big *** FMIC visible.

When you do the MAF upgrade, you can either get a standalone system or you can have your ECU remapped. The stock ECU doesn't understand the new MAF, so you'll have to tell it what it is. If you go the reflash route, you might as well get new injectors too and save yourself the hassle and cost of having it reflashed twice.

The stock clutch will definitely get screwed if you leave it in. Go to http://www.SR20DETperformance.com and look at what they have in the way of clutches. Also http://www.heavythrottle.com is another great resource for SR parts. Both companies are located on the east coast, so I don't know how well that will aid you.

The guys at Sport Compact Car took a Z32 chromoly flywheel and mated it to a maxima clutch and Z32 pressure plate IIRC and it's holding fine at 280 RWHP and since it's an organic disc, it should feel like stock which is good for heavy traffic.
