I am planning on ordering a new car deck from http://www.sonicelectronix.com I've ordered from them before and their prices are very good and so was the service.

My question is, I was planning on getting a single DIN deck, and it comes with the free install kit as well. Is the free kit that comes with the deck all that I need to install the deck...do I need to get anything extra like adapters and such?

As well any recommendations on a deck around $200 would be appreciated as well!

You need to make sure they give you a single din install kit, a harness adapter, AND an antenna adapter.

These items are available from versaspeed.com if you cannot get them otherwise.

My guess is that they're going to provide you with the dash kit only, not the harness or antenna adaptor. And right now, there is only one company producing the dash kit (metra) so if they don't distribute Metra stuff, then you'll get nothing. This is a better question for them... just email them and see what they plan on sending you. Like EV said, just use the money you saved and pick the installation stuff up from versaspeed.com

hmm, I e-mailed them a couple of days ago and am still waiting on their reply. In the meantime, does versaspeed ship to Canada? If not, what are some of my other options? crutchfieldcanada.com?

Go to http://www.versaspeed.com and click on "www.shopversaspeed.com," and you'll get the email address. Email Bob directly and ask him.

awesome, i just placed my order at sonicelectronix and i'll see what accessories they give me and I'll see what I'll need to order from versaspeed.

I've never installed a deck before. My plan is to follow any instructions that come with the deck and/or follow the tutorial on the front page. Is there anything I should be looking out for while installing/ is there a common problem or mistake that people run into? or is this something someone like me should take to the shop and let them do it?

I'm not terribly mechanical and I could install one myself, as long as it's just a normal CD/MP3 head unit. the DVD player was a bit over my head, which is why I had a shop install it.

The tutorial gives you a good start, but it was written before the harness and antenna adapters existed. So once you get to the part where it says cut wires... stop.

Check out this document: http://aaron.luman.org/pics/SubInstall.pdf

It provides instructions for replacing the head unit. You can also go to the how to on replacing a head unit here: http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=227206

Just note that on the 5th pic of the how to, your emergency flasher switch and airbag light might be reversed from what is pictured... the later built cars have this design for some unknown reason.

Replacing a head unit isn't that hard...usually the hardest part is figuring out how to get the dash off...which you have instructions to do here. If you buy a wire harness it's even easier. If you don't want to spend the money, you can always splice the wires together..but I suggest you know what you're doing if you go that route

Have fun...it's always a learning experience the first time you take off a car's dash but if you're nerdy like me...it really WILL be fun!

I got the Sony CDX-GT710. Everything works, like the radio and such, but the motorized panel does not open? Any suggestions? I reset the deck already. And there are two wires on the receiver that I didn't use, one called ATT and on called Illumination. any suggestions??

It's a Sony. there is a VERY good chance it's defective.

Those other two wires are not used if the Metra harness didn't have anything to crimp them into.

You also got the antenna adapter and connected that in too, right?

Yep, i essentially connected everything to the wiring harness. I also got the antenna adapter and connected to the Sony receiver that was labelled 'ANT REM' on the diagram. If I did install the antenna adapter wrong, would it actually effect the faceplate moving?

Would anyone have their stock 6 CD head unit for sale after an upgrade? I'm looking for one with AUX for my S model.

Thanks.
