Well after 16 years of midwest winters I need to replace the the brake pad shims, front and rear. Any recommendations of where to buy these from?

Probably pretty much OEM only... www.orderinfinitiparts.com or your local dealership parts counter is a good place to start.

Sadly,Infiniti rapes you with the price of the shim kits, which cost the same or more than their brakepads! After many sets of factory pads/shim kits- I finally switched over to Akebono Pro-Act ceramic pads, which come with the shims already attached, about $50/pair from Amazon, etc.A MUCH better value for a great set of pads.

Thanks guys, I went with the Akebono Pro Act ceramic pair also from rock auto. Now here is my next question.

When moving the rear caliper piston back into place, can a regular "C" clamp be used or do I need to rent the kit that rotates the piston back into place?

I use one of these for the calipers, but honestly it's just a glorified C clamp lol http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... brake+tool

*fixed link. The things to search for are: "disc brake tool" or "brake spreader".

Here's a comment about brake pad shims, as mentioned above, I've found that ceramic pads come with shims preinstalled, as in permanently affixed. Also, I have found that all levels of quality except the very cheapest brake pads come with NEW shims anyways. You really do want new shims each time you change brake pads. And you really don't want the cheapest brake pads. Ceramic pads cost $45 up to $100 per axle.

The highest level of brake pads come with new retaining clips too. Those are the funky little metal clips that hold the brake pads, 2 per wheel. If you haven't done so yet, you're gonna wanna get new clips, but not mandatory.

+1 for Akebono Pro-Act ceramic pads. No shim issues either.

I just use a big pair of groove joint pliers and the old brake pad. The caliper pistons don't rotate, they just squeeze back in to the caliper.

Well I have to go to Sears today to get a 17mm & the 11/16 Socket. I happen to break the socket last year replacing another part. Now I have to make sure all sockets can remove rusted parts and not round off bolts. : )
