why do you want to reach the pivot? are you afraid a heavier clutch will break it?
and.. man, i dunno, but i bet you can reach it. taking out the clutch fork is hard enough, let alone trying to get the ratainer spring to stay in place.. but you might be able to reach the pivot ball with a long 3/8" ratchet extension or two and a swivel with a deep-well socket.. i wanna say it's 14mm, but i don't know for sure.
if you're gonna be in there, you might as well grease it up real thick. i used that lithium-based molybdenum (sp?) stuff.
when doing my clutch swap, when i was almost finished and i started to mount the transmission, i got the input shaft almost in all the way, and then i realized i forgot something. i forget exactly what it was.. but i remember battling with the clutch fork and.. after half an hour of looking like a monkey screwing a football, i just said "screw it" and i took the transmission back off.
if i were you, i'd just take the transmission off. i think it's a lot easier on an s14 than a 13 like mine.
i don't hear of the pivot ball breaking too often. i would imagine clutching really hard and often with a real big clutch, like a twin or tripple plate, wouldn't help matters. i dunno about a 6 puck.
i have a heavy clutch, original 15 year old pivot ball, and i've been racing almost every day for about half a year with no problems so far. i've heard the nismo pivots are a little stronger, and they're cheap, so if you happen to be inside the transmission anyway, why not? if it's not broken, i wouldn't worry about fixing it.. though if it DOES brake, that'll make getting home a little more.. colorful.
