how hard is it to change rings? and should you do pistons and rods to at the same time for added boost?

Well, the piston needs to be out of the block which, in a nut shell means pulling the head and oil pan, undoing the rod bolts and pulling the rod-top and piston out (if you don't want to pull the engine). If you're not careful installing piston rings, they will break. There is also an order to the installation of the rings on each piston. And, you'll need a ring compressor to reinstall the piston into the cylinder bore. If you plan on doing this yourself, get assistance from an experienced mechanic or friend.

I've had great experience with Wiseco piston rings ... using them with the CP's for my build. Not certain about the OEM's when it comes to boost.

It's always a good idea to do a rod and piston upgrade at the same time, if not just for the added aggrevation and cost of doing them separately. Low(er) compression pistons will allow for higher boost; forged rods will add strength. Save money and time ... do them together.

re-ringing the KA is a *****, but only because nissan was nice enough to put the oil pan over the front crossmember (at least on the DE, not sure about the E).

What about rings selection?Like total seal rings, etc?

how does the car run? its probably easier to pull the block to rering the pistons. you would have to hone the block and stuff. some people skip honing if the crosshatch is still in good condition but screw that.

Nah, total seal sucks IMO. I wish now i had gotten the 99 Altima chrome rings. Only 20k miles after high compression rebuild (on a SOHC) i started getting blowby and now im burning some oil.

can you actually re-ring it without pullin the transmission too? I searched in the past and some KA folks said you can put rings in without removing your entire engine, but you'd had to remove the transmission.....

you may have to unless you can move the crank and slip the rods by the side.

also this all depends on how much boost you want to run, after so much boost(dunno if its 300hp on sohcs, but i do believe the 89 runs less compression than the 90 or viseversa), also a good tune is necessary.

not possible for me because I would hone the block which would put grit all over the ratatng assembly.
