ok so im turning my motor over last nite, with the cam covers off and the exhaust mani off and like wen i turn it overi hear a hissing, its obv. the air thats being compressed in the cylinder escaping, seems like its coming from the oil passages but anyways, is this normal, like if i go all the way it will all leak out in like 3-5 secs. if i go halfway it will leak and then just be super easy to turn over the other half. now i know the rings arent total seal but wtf shouldent it hold compression longer than 3-5 secs?

Not nesiccarily. They might be weak, but they won't hold compression for a real long time, even when new.

What you hear is probably a result of valve timing/overlap. Because an engine is designed to run at say 500rpm + the valve timing is such that there isn't really much time when both valves are completely closed, so when you're turning an engine over by hand at say, 3 rpms the cylinder only ends up compressing a small quanity of air, plus there's no heat so your rings and piston are slightly smaller that at opperating temps etc. Everything adds up. There are more obvious signs that your rings are shot when the engine's running.

ACTUALLY, even during the compression stroke, both of the valves are open for the first part of it. As ColoradoQ was nice enough to explain what I was to busy at work to explain, is dead on, and the reason that it doesn't have much compression when cranking by hand.
