So apparently, the pistons are jammed which is preventing the timing gears from moving and my car from starting, We bought a set of pistons and piston rings. MY question is, does anyone know of a Guide or some sort of directions for reinstalling/uninstalling pistons?

Well sir,

If your pistons are "jammed" as you say, you have a bigger problem. But here you go.

-Remove heads-Remove oil pan-Remove oil pump pickup-Remove rod caps...mark them with a punch to keep track of them.-Tap rods to force pistons out

Done... pistons out.

The wristpins are pressed so you will have to use a hydraulic press to get them out.

You will need to bore or hone the cylinder wall depending on the condition. I would also polish my crank with emery cloth, purchase new main/rod bearings, and maybe even have a machine shop do it for you. Mesing around with plastigauge and assembling bottom ends is quite a task.

It is always a good learning experience though.

Hope I helped....

Actually... the 84 to ~4/87 VG30's have pressed in wrist pins. The later "W-series" VG's have floating wrist pins held in with clips.

Check out http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM for the factory service manual for your vehicle. That will give you the absolute best rebuilding info.

Lastly, if the pistons are jammed on something, in a VG, it is likely that the timing belt broke and a piston hit a valve which means you'll also need to rebuild or just get replacement heads.

I'd shop around some local salvage yards or take a look at http://www.car-part.com for a replacement engine. In a lot of cases you can get a whole VG cheaper than it would cost to rebuild it. You can use pretty much any VG from other car models as a replacement by simply swapping all of the external pieces from your current engine to the replacement. This makes finding a replacement much easier. I'd just avoid the VG30's offered in the Nissan, Ford, and Mercury vans as they're designed differently and don't make quite as much power due to that.
