You need a pilot bushing puller.

Yes, there is a special tool just for that.

I changed the pilot bushing on my SR and my friends SR.

Don't worry about it. Pilot busings on SR's do nothing but set up the clutch alignment tool. They serve no mechanical purpose on the SR.

You will beat up the new one worse putting it in than the old one will look when you pull it out.

all nissan rwd engines have fully functional pilot bushings i believe. it would suprise my greatly to see a rwd application where the pilot bushing did not support the input shaft.

Sorry EZ cheese. But i know from painful experince you are not correct.

My sr came with a screwedup pilot bushing. Mechanic friend said "ahh dont worry, you dont need that" 2 months later, off comes the transmission for a new pilot bushing.

I apologize for the misinformation.

What I said is true on FWD SR20's (I know for a fact). I assumed it carried over to RWD SR20's as well, but I could be mistaken.

When you have the engine out, why not do it.

It should be done as part of a total engine prep.

what part did you use to replace it? We took careful measurements.. but could not find a bushing from ANY company to fit.. So my friend turned one on a lathe.

The nissan dealers carry it. I had to get one from them once. I cant remember what application it was from. It might have been from an se-r or maxima.

91+ KA24DE 240SX

Lets use some sense here people... KA24 transmission bolts up in place of an SR transmission if you swap bellhousing.... soooo.... that would mean... that.... the input shafts on both trannies fit into the same size pilot bushing.

The 89-90 KA24E pilotbushing would probably fit, but I used DOHC both installs I did.

turns out that the input shafts from the transmission are the same size. Thats why the trannies can be swapped. USDM KA24DE's (93 at lest) use a pilot bearing. The SR uses a bushing.

I went to the parts store and my friend there pulled out a ka24 pilot bearing and a 92ish?? SE-R throwout bushing. The inside diameter of each was identical. The pilot bearing on the KA however is obviously much bigger because its a ball bearing type.

He also said that pilot bushings don't usually fail unless they are damaged or not lubricated properly. (lithium grease)

Also he had a handy tip to get them out. He said you could fill the area behind the bushing with grease and then push in the alignment tool and the hydraulic pressure would push the bushing or bearing right out.

i believe all nissan pilot bushings are the same(at least most of them anyway). i have never ever seen a pilot bearing on a nissan. most nissans have the same input shaft general dimensions. i have one that i cut off to use as an alignment tool and as a pilot bushing remover(hammer method). it fits just about all. the few exceptions are some fwd(shorty shaft), z31's with the borg warner trans, and something else i forget.

We looked up the PN for the 1993 240sx pilot bearing and it had one. not a bushing like the SR's

I always pulled them out with a hammer and a big flathead screwdriver. Break the thing into 2 chunks, then pry the lip up and get a set of pliers on them and pull the chunks out. Then just line the new one up and find a socket that will press it in and reinstall using the poundometer.

Come on guys, stop using such ghetto *** tools.

Go to autozone and rent/borrow a pilot bushing remover tool. It makes removing the pilot bushing a 10 second job.

Hey, the poundometer is the pilot bushing installation tool, not removal tool.
