Measure the bushing inner dia. and go to the hardware store and get a wooden dowel rod as close as possible to the inner dia. of the bushing. Then pack the bushing with wheel bearing grease and then insert the dowel in the bushing and hit it with a hammer and the grease will hydraulicly push the pilot bushing out.

I was going to say vise grips which is what i have used many times but that grease and dowel trick is nifty! I'll use that one the next time I am staring at a pilot bearing.

i just went through that on my s13 240sx. you can rent a tool for free at autozone or pepboys called a pilot bushing removal tool and a slidehammer. the tool has two arms with lips at the end. you attach the tool to the end of the slide hammer and insert the two arms through the pilot bushing. as you tighten the tool to the s.hammer it will spread the two arms apart and the lips will either grap in the bushing or behind the bushings rim. then just pop the slide hammer a few good times and it should bring the bushing out with it. you may have to give it a few trys but it will come out. just make sure not to spread the arms too much or it will dig into the bushing housing area.

what car are you working on? im trying to finish mine right now but im having hell getting the transmission all the way back in. ive got the shaft into the clutch disc but i still have about an inch to go and i cant get the splines to line up right so it will go in all the way. im so f'n frustrated.

hope this helps--chris

i I took my new bushing to the hardware store and slid it over all the dowels I found the 5/8" works perfect. Its really easy to do this way especally for people like me that dont live conveintly close to rental tools:( thanks for the tip guys.

On a semi-related note make sure you have an alignment tool before doing a clutch, I live out on a farm an hour from parts stores and found myself without one today. Luckily I was able to McGuyver a makeshift tool by stringing a bunch of washers and nuts on to a bolt that are the same dameter as the clutch disc and pilot bushing respectivley. I took a pic of my device b/c I found it so funy ill post it on tues....

Rent the pilot bearing removal tool and slide hammer from Autozone and use that to remove the bearing.
