Hi everyone, This post is in regards to an ongoing problem that I have been having and I have yet to resolve.I have been doing track days and autox with my car for 3 years or so and Ive changed the clutch on 2 occasions for various reasons.1 time was shortly after a 5 speed conversion where I reused the clutch that was in the car I got all the parts from and the second was when I was going through the esses at road atlanta and went for the 3rd to 4th upshift and found a 2nd gear downshift....yeah ...bad idea.At any rate all is good for the first 500 miles each time and then I start getting a problem with the pilot shaft being dragged by the pilot bushing. When I clutch in ,a noise can be heard when I try to select first especially if I give it a little gas .It continues if Im sitting still in gear witht he clutch in .The only thing that makes it go away is to either take the car out of gear and let the clutch out ,or take off ,sometimes itll do it on the second gear upshift.I think a needle bearing would resolve it but the bushing is so thin that I suspect a bearing isnt an option over the bushing .Its not a release bearing .Is anyone else having problems with this ?Thanks ,

Ricky--

I have not run across that problem before. Is it possible the shaft is or has a burr on it? Or is there some free play in that shaft? Some times when the main shaft bearing in the trans start to go they will work on the pilot bushings.

originally I thought something like that ,so i went in and replaced the main shaft, its bearing and the countershaft cluster due to some nasty wear on the teeth and the fact it was whining so bad it sounded like a straight cut gearLOL.Of all the things Ive done and replaced the pilot bushing has reared its ugly head shortly afterwards .Im at a loss at this point of what to do to correct the issue.

I wouldn't expect you could hear a pilot bushing- it's too small, and ensconced in too much metal. More likely it's the input shaft bearing. Is your pilot bearing a bushing, or a Timpken?

do you only hear the noise when the car has sat overnight or for a long period of time?

when i back my car out of the garage after sitting overnight, it makes a high pitched metal to metal noise when i start to release the clutch. it goes away when i press the clutch and after about 10 second of a loud ehhhhhhh.

the shop that did the work couldn't figure out what the noise was and they said they didn't hear the noise.

so now it's going in to another shop...i think it's the lack of grease or pilot bushing or to bearing.
