Doing my five speed swap, and the pilot bearing will not budge. Broke the puller once already, just wondering if I could apply some heat back there, or would it cause a problem. Open to any other suggestion too.

Thanks

You mean the pilot bushing? since ur auto u got that big fat grey metal ring..... Heck that was hell to take off, try the pullers, or the hidraulic method, if not well chisel.... i did the chisel method.... hellish thing to do... Good luck!

Dont heat it, you COULD warp something and the rear oil seal, you could damage it too... i did hammering the bushing, imagine what heat would do...

Drill that junk out. Search "pilot bearing" on this website too, there are lots of other thread with guys that were in the same position as you, with plenty of options.

I, myself, drilled in two little nubs that I could fit a puller into, then used a slide hammer, and it came right out!..........after 4 hours of drilling in the first place, lol.

If you have a good plan that has been proven to work, stick it out!

go to autozone and get a blind hole puller and use a slide hamer to get that busing out. A blind hole puller is the only puller small enough to fit in that bushing. A couple of good whacks and it should come right out.

There are many attachments that are small enough to fit inside.

I got mine out using the hydraulic method.

I got a long socket that fits snug in the pilot bearing, plugged the socket hole with electrical tape. Then I filled the socket and pilot bearing hole with grease, inserted the socket, and started hitting the socket with a mallet. The hydraulic pressure after a few minutes forces the bearing out. It took 5 minutes or so.

I found this trick on a web site http://www.brickboard.com/ARCH...shtml, sounded crazy but it does work!
