As some of you know, I'm helping out Ken Stouffer for this year's hill climb on Pike's Peak. Just figured I'd make a thread giving some details!

Today was tech day, tomorrow is practice day #1, thursday is day #2, friday is day #3 and qualifying as well as fan fest downtown at night. Then, sunday is the 88th running of the PPIHC!

So far we've had a lot of fun... I met up with Ken on Saturday and we took a trip up the mountain to test surfaces and check out the new changes that may have come up. We made a few stops here and there, and I also snapped some pics of some of the cool turns and whatnot.

One stop was the turn at 11 mile water station. We stopped to check out the surface as the chemicals used on the dirt have made it almost like concrete. Awesome for some fast times this year! Then we made a stop at Glen Cove, and stopped in for a drink before proceeding up the mountain.
Image

As we got higher, I snapped a few pics of some of the road, and for those who haven't been it is awesome!

I met up again with Ken again on Monday. We were up in Castle Rock getting the car re-wrapped in spots to sport the new sponsors... getting the old Shocker fag's logo off the car.

Image

Image

Image

Image

That leads us up to today, Tuesday. We got the car over to tech inspection, and had some fun shaking the hands of people like Rhys Millen! Rhys' car for this year is insane! The Hyundai Genesis powered, Red Bull sponsored Unlimited class car just looks plain fast.

Image

Image

Image

Along with Rhys' machine, there was also the AMS tuned NOS sponsored evo piloted by the Kerns..... it is win.

Image

Image

Image

And what does Nissan have to offer for the Vintage class? This....

Image

Image

Later in the day, Ken's co-driver Travis Tollett showed up... and slammed the s*** out of his Titan in front of everyone!

Image

But of course... today was all about getting the Pike's Peak Time Attack 2WD Classed 240sx teched.

It showed up

Image

got taken off the trailer (Ken looks determined)

Image

got driven over to the tech line, just 2 cars back of Rhys

Image

Image

and of course... it passed tech!

Image

More updates will come daily... up until after the race is over and hopefully we take the win in our class! Stay tuned...

best day to come down is of course race day. that would be sunday. you need to get through the gate REALLY early in the morning to make it through before they close the road.

And for today's updates...

We got the peak well before there was ever light. We pulled the car up, unloaded it from the trailer, installed the bumper and then Ken drove it to the starting line of the middle section where we were practicing today. Once there, we did a final lug nut check and made sure all the air pressures were set. Then... we chilled out until it was go time!

Now, because I was working on Ken's car as he was starting his runs, I don't have many pics of him from today. But i was able to get some good stuff.

Here's the car once we were done getting it ready to run.

Image

And then, later in the day when Ken was done running, he parked it next to Travis' Titan awaiting the trip back down the hill to be reloaded back on the trailer.

Image

Another story that is close to home here is one of my friends, Savannah Rickli, is becoming the youngest girl to ever drive the race. She's 16, and running in Ken's class in a Mini Cooper S.

Image

Now on to the more interesting stories of the day...

Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima of Japan, the current record holder on the peak, suffered a broken half shaft on his first run of the day. No worries though, he'll be back tomorrow and still well in the running for first in the Unlimited class.

Image

Image

Image

The other first day issue story, this one a bit more dramatic, is the the AMS tuned, NOS sponsored evo suffered a pretty well destroyed engine. They made a couple runs, but after just those few times up the hill the engine suffered a shredded timing belt, exploded rocker arms, and possibly much more that is not known yet. Now, the biggest disappointment on this whole deal is that the Kerns spent all of last week driving out to Chicago to get this engine in, as just a few days before they blew the engine that was in the car. So, a full week with a trip out to Chicago for a new engine, some dyno tuning and then a trip back to CO was basically wasted. The engine only had roughly 30 miles on it and is now essentially worthless. The car is now in Loveland, CO at SCR performance, seeing if there is any way to get the car back into action for the next day of practice, and more importantly, qualifying on Friday. If all else fails, they'll be running a bone stock 4G63 in place of the AMS motor.

Image

Image

And because I know some of you are anxious, here's some vids!

These are all from where we were at the starting line of the mid section of the course for today's practice session.

There's some interesting cars... with tons of power to spare, even at 11,000+ feet above sea level.

and of course the big names in the Unlimited class... this is Paul Dallenbach who is one of the guys looking to break the 10:00 mark this year.

and the one everyone has their eyes on, Rhys Millen...

well... these cars are made for the peak specifically... and for the most part the altitude is taken into consideration with the tune... so rhys' at 750 HP will prolly make still well over 600 at the summit
1992MaxSE wrote:is this gonna be covered on Speed??
no... it will be aired at some point on altitude sports... it usually takes FOREVER for them to get it on air though... most people forget the race happened by then

So... today was an overall success!

We got the car running, and today was the practice for the top section from Devil's Playground up to the summit. The starting line setup was a little nicer today, so I was able to get some pics and vid of Ken. The practice tires we're using, however, are not great. With 500 hp, Ken has no traction at all in the dirt. So given that, the confidence Ken got today was great and we can't wait to get the race day Hoosiers put on the car!

Here's a few shots from the top section starting area.

Image

Image

And this is Ken's 3rd run of the day... you'll see he can't get on it very well in the dirt whatsoever, but with only a 2 mile stretch to worry about, race day should be juuuust fine :)

Ken has some tough competition this year though. This GT-3 cup car is also in his class, and on top of being far better in the dirt, it also is just plain awesome everywhere else on the mountain.

Image

Rhys Millen also did well today, with some decent testing with his car in the dirt for the first time.

Image

And some repair stories are up as well. The AMS evo has a brand new engine. The guys from AMS flew out late last night after the engine blew yesterday, and rebuilt it last night at SCR Performance in Loveland, CO. They fired it up at 2:30 this morning, just in time to get the car back on the trailer and back up the mountain. They only made one pass today, just to see the mountain and to make sure the engine would hold up... nothing too hardcore.

Image

And also back today, after the broken half shaft yesterday, was Monster Tajima. Enough said.

Monster is absolutely insane in the dirt... it appears that Rhys is great on the pavement, but on the dirt it just seems Monster is beyond dominant... should be awesome to see if one of them can break the 10 minute mark, and better yet, who will win!

I'm back early today. Today was practice day 3 and qualifying for our group at the starting line for the race, and the bottom portion of the track. Ken did well, and on his 3rd run he really pulled it together and knocked some good seconds off his time. We still can't wait to mount the Hoosiers and get up the hill race day with some real grip!

Here's some video from the start of Ken's 2nd run.

Then of course there was the likes of Paul Dallenbach and Rhys Millen

and of course.... Monster Tajima... taking the fastest time in the Unlimited class as well as fastest time of the event.

Well, just like that... race day has come and gone. We got a pretty decent time up the mountain with a 13:19. Not bad for a little 240 and Ken's second time driving a car up the hill! That time was good for second in our class, only following the Porshe GT-3 Cup Car. Overall, we did great and are very pleased with the result.

Greatest week you could ever imagine!

I'm sorry I don't have more pics but my camera was dying so I only managed a few.

This is the video of Ken leaving the line on what would be and awesome run to the summit.

Then I got a few pics when we showed up with everyone in their pit stalls. Some of the usual suspects as well as others

and what happens to ACP when he doesn't do hot (never)? It was less than 2 miles in that ACP went off the course... and his NOS evo was toast

then i also got video of Tajima and Dallenbach as well.

^^^I know I do. I'm just waiting for listings of all the other front runners times. Just for frame of reference. Is there any onboard video?

Big congrats to Ken and Fatman Racing for grabbing 2nd and all their accomplishments!
