Well, as much as I'm an advocate of Standalones, I've jumped on the Piggyback bandwagon. I just picked up a fuel cut defender for my 20 and will pick up a 5 knob Safc here within the next month. Has anyone run either of these on their car? I know FC guys complain about the false signal from the FCC leaning them out a bit. I figure with 550cc's and a Safc I should be ok for a while.

I figure these will work and are kind of needed for my swap. Since I gave my turbo to Hybrid, I've decided to pick up a GT32 turbo, which will require more fuel and some tuning. For adequate fueling and to avoid fuel cut under load... these two items should work fine (Safc should help fit the RB25 MAF as well).

These "Band-Aids" should be coming off before too long. The cool thing is that I can probably get my money out of them both when I pick up my Microtech next spring... the price on these has not changed in a long time.

Just curious, how much are you saving by doing this set-up instead of just going with microtech? And when you get the microtech unit, you wont need any of those anymore?

The FCC cost me $32.50 shipped and the 5 knob Safc normally goes for about $100.

The Microtech should go for about $1250 with the dyno tune (going by how much Fito was charged for his tune). I will do the installation, and it is suppose to come with a baseline program to get the car to the rollers.

So, I am saving about $1100 by going with my current setup. The Microtech can do the job (better) that both the safc and FCC can do for my motor, so I will not need them after it is installed.

Where can I get that deal? I thought the sAFC goes for about $3-400.

This is the "old-school" style S-AFC... aka 5-knob. This one does not have the glam factor of the newer one, or all of the gadgets for that matter... but it controlles fuel at RPM levels, which is what I need. Do a search on Ebay for "safc," and take a look at the inexpesive ones.

To use the RB25 MAF, will I just set the pins on the back to the RB25DET setting?

I don't think you need the fuel cut defender. Leaning out the fuel trim should get rid of any fuel cut cause maf voltage is been fooled.... well on the 2nd n 3rd gen afcs anyway.

For $32 I guess it is good insurance. I might have to try running above the fuel cut (I think 16psi? Please feel free to let me know otherwise) without the FCC and with to see the difference.

Just a recommendation of course, buy a used HKS AFR, 10 times better then the SAFC. I never ran into a fuel cut problem??? Is the boost solenoid that normally goes on the aft left firewall in a Skyline still hooked up? If so I think you can simply remove it to fix the any fuel cut issues. Although I can't remember at what point I had mine removed, but I'm pretty sure I was already boostin 15 psi at that point.

Anyway, glad you finally picked out your turbo, hope she works out well for ya. There isn't anything wrong with a piggyback system my friend. People who say you need a full standalone to run real fast would most likely have lost to my Skyline which was running on a stock ECU and a bunch of GN tricks to add fuel and boost...lol.

Why is the HKS AFR a lot better than the S-AFC? I was considering getting the apex'i unit also for now until my power reaches a point where a full stand alone is appropriate. I think the hks version is cheaper. I have seen them on ebay for 200 bucks or less for new. Just wondering why you like it more?~ANDREW~

Hey Brian, hows it going? So you say you would choose the HKS unit because it has a ton more options than the Apexi unit? and what is EIDS? Thanks man, Jamison

Idle air stabilization=EIDS, it lets you run an open atmosphere BOV without stalling. The AFR is easy to use and install. More correction points aswell.PS, You ever get your RB running??

I was wondering about the standalones. . . . . do any of them have a safe mode like the factory ECU's have. So, if anything go's wrong, it'll be ok. Also, is there a piggyback timing computer?

Thanks,Jeramy

Thanks for the info, I think I will use the HKS unit instead of an afc then. Car still isnt running yet...I ended up getting scammed on that motor I bought and the ****ing thing was blown when I got it. So I just got a new long block not to long ago and its going in this weekend. On top of getting scammed on a few other items, this car has become my living ****ing nightmare!

Are there 2 diffrent load points on the HKS like there is on the SAFC? High and Low maps? I know the SAFC2 has more adjustment points than the older one.

Might want to start a new thread about who scammed you and some details so everyone can avoid who sold you the motor (off topic for this thread).

The HKS unit does looks good, but seeing that it's a temp thing for me... the 5 knob SAFC should be fine.

WD, after running some more numbers on the comp map of the GT32... I have decided to go with a GT25R instead (I am getting the one with the T04S comp housing...). The GT32 ended up being a little to small for my needs.
