Hi, I'm new to the forum, but I'll start by saying that I've been lurking for a little while and reading/searching a bunch, so this isn't one of those "what's the best turbo" kind of questions.
I have a 93 s13 base model coupe that I've driven stock for the last 3 years (a record for me since I work on everything I get). Just recently I've gotten the bug to build a little more power with it, so I've started thinking about going KA-T, and aiming for a 75-100 hp increase. I've got previous experience with a turbo'd Toyota pickup, so I'm not a complete newbie, and I'm a mechanical engineer who works on and fabs his own stuff.
My question is this: from what I've read, going turbo on the KA motor should run $2K to $3K depending what I do, but I don't see where it all adds up to that much.
I see a local guy has a T3/T4 turbo with SR20 manifold and wastegate for $600 on craigslist. (I know the manifold is different so I'd have to do some fab work.)
Exhaust would run me around $300.
I'm guessing I could get intake pipes fabbed up for around $150.
If I'm only shooting for 7-8lbs of boost I should be able to do without an intercooler, for now anyway. (I know, the project is never done, I'll have to get one eventually.)
I haven't priced injectors, not clear yet on whether I can use OEM injectors from a 300ZXTT, etc, or if I need to buy aftermarket.
I also haven't priced fuel management systems.
For a reasonably capable DIY guy on the cheap, do injectors and fuel management really have to add up to $1,000+? Seems like there would be some cheaper alternatives, am I missing something?
What do you guys think, can you piece together a turbo on a KA for less?
Thanks
