I may be the exception here but I think that car looks ugly. The nose is ugly - never cared for the cookie monster eyebrows of headlights; the front grill is ugly - on the Z4 makes you wonder whether the car is a Pontiac; the wheels are just plain ugly; the tail lights are ugly. All BMWs used to be masculine yet elegant looking. They were manly and beefy looking, yet the smooth lines seemed to be artistic. Now, the car looks like it's just trying to look different at the expense of all the emotions it used to invoke. I don't care how fun they are to drive; if I can't enjoy looking at it, I can't enjoy owning it.
I have a theory that BMW sales are doing well solely because of people who want to be seen in one. All these people want to do is be seen in one, most likely a new one. Once the fashion statement and wealth statement is made, their interest moves on to another make and model car. They are not long-term owners. I also think that the second-hand market for BMWs of the Bangle era is going to tank. With no one inspired to keep new ones around and no long-term buyers motivated to buy used ones, second hand prices I think will be the lowest of any series they have made in decades. Eventually, that trend will show in stats showing huge, steep rates of depreciation.
I used to be a huge fan of BMWs, especially the 5-series. Now, I wouldn't drive one if they handed it to me.
