I just had the rear main seal replaced by AAMCO for $1,169.30. This seal was in use for 126,106 miles exactly. This is the second RMS that has been in my Pathfinder. The first was replaced at 1,720 miles by a Nissan dealership under warranty. This seal then leaked somewhere between 90k and 105k miles.

Pictures of the damaged side of the seal:

It is obvious that no high-mileage or thicker oil would have ever stopped this seal from leaking. Slow it? Quite a possibility, but who knows. AAMCO claimed to have found no defects on the mating surfaces of the seal, but they did find two missing bolts on the bellhousing and replaced those free of charge.

The seal was replaced with a Fel-Pro BS 40631. I have read that Fel-Pro makes high quality gaskets/seals and try their best to remove OE defects and try to improve the design. I did not see this seal, but if I were really curious I could purchase one for $35, photograph it, post pictures here, and then return the seal. The job took about 6 hours to complete, but the shop kept the PF overnight to ensure there were no issues. I certainly hope this third RMS will not leak for another 100k at least.

The shop did not lose any fluids other than a very small amount of automatic transmission fluid when disconnecting the transmission cooler lines. I retained my engine oil and filter (as they were recently changed within the past 2000 miles) and all engine coolant. The work seems to be satisfactorily performed, and I am happy with the shop. I have a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. I'll likely be a return customer if the need arises. I will check tomorrow to ensure there are no more oil drips around the bellhousing.

That is an annoying repair --- You do hear of this on the engine. One of mine showed signs of a leak when I switched over to Synthetic last year. The car had about 130k at the time -- I got a great deal on some synthetic 5/30 oil so I figured I would use it. It started to leak after a few days -- I would get a small drop under it. I was really surprised -- I had never had this happen. The loss was so small that I did not worry about it -- switch it out for Castrol high mile oil in the spring -- leak stopped.

I've heard good things about fel-pro. They make high quality gaskets and should last you another 100K.

Well, s***. It was still leaking out the weep hole. I dropped it off at AAMCO and they replaced the RMS again with a Nissan part this time, and they also concluded that my aluminum oil pan gasket is leaking so that's another $448 + tax down the drain to replace - they're using an OEM gasket for that too. I'll be picking it up again tomorrow.

I will be picking up the Pathfinder tomorrow. I dropped by earlier today and they replaced the front & rear oil pan lip seals and RMS again with Nissan OEM parts, they're keeping it overnight to ensure no leaks. They said the bottom of my engine was spotless, which is nice to know. I got one of the old lip seals and will post pictures of it soon. They lost about a quart of coolant during the process and will top it off with universal, but it's such a small amount I'm not gonna worry about it.

What ever happened with this? Did it leak again? Do you think it was the Fel-Pro unit that was defective?

Nothing is leaking. The Fel-Pro RMS was fine, the leak I was seeing while it was in was from a damaged oil pan gasket and not from the RMS.

I have ~145,680 miles currently with no leaks and maybe 4oz of oil consumption over a 6k mile oil change interval.

Thanks to everyone for posting your experiences with the RMS leak, very surprised at the number of people with this problem.
I still have to change the the o-rings on the oil cooler so I think that will be first. I hate oil leaks with a passion but I think I
will be dealing with the RMS for awhile. I zip tied a couple of cotton ponies in there for now so at least they will soak up the
oil between oil changes. Ha! This truck has been very good to myself and my family so I really can't complain especially in
view of the fact that it has 185,000 miles on it and all I've to replace is the rear struts. Thanks again to everyone!!!

@pops2ride what do you mean by cotton ponies? My RMS is leaking pretty good and I would like to prevent driveway spillage as much as possible.

I second the question.

I just replaced the rear main seal with an OEM one AND made a new gasket for the upper oil pan and I'm dealing with a pretty substaintal leak. It'll be a while till I have the patience to get back into it again. IT was a b**** of a job on my back in my garage. Mean time I too need to figure out a way to contain some of the oil drippage... Can't just plug it up from the outside that'd be bad, but need something to help soak it up.

lol I'm pretty sure cotton ponies = Tampax. Diapers are also great for holding a lot of fluid if you're looking for something to tide you over. Hey, we all spring leaks as we get older :chuckle:

So based on the figures you provided, The Aamco shop charged a labor rate of about $175/hr. That's more than any Nissan dealer; even out here in high priced California. Did you get other quotes for the job?

Pretty sure the RMS on my '02 LE is leaking. That or the oil pan seal. I'm going to fix the leaking valve cover first though and go from there.

Just had a Nissan dealer replace the rear main seal and the upper oil pan gasket. It wasn't cheap. :frown: I went with the dealer though because when I called them for a ballpark price on replacing the RMS the service advisor told me without me mentioning it first that they like to replace the upper oil pan gasket while they are in there. So I guess they convinced me they knew what they were doing. I didn't get to see the old parts but they told me the RMS was pretty trashed and was definitely the source of the leak. It was leaving a nickel sized oil spot everywhere it parked. I also had them do a couple of other things while it was there including replacing under warranty the driver's seat belt that wouldn't retract.

I am just happy it isn't leaking any longer. I had previously fixed the other oil leaks (valve cover gaskets & oil cooler). I changed the oil in it tonight and noticed the oil light went out much quicker than it had previously so I hope with all of the leaks fixed that the oil pressure has been restored a bit. This is actually the vehicle my teen daughter drives and she loves it so I'd like to keep it around a while (currently has 194k miles on it).

ETA: I am the third owner and have all of the maintenance records from the previous owners. All fluids were changed regularly and nothing major has ever been repaired/replaced previously including the RMS.

Dear All,

I have small leak on the weep hole...
It's engine oil leak and not ATF fluid leak.

The problem is from the Rear Main Seal?
Or if it's the RMS only ATF fluid would leak?

Or can it be the upper oil pan gasket?
If so it would leak to the same place, the weep hole?

Thanks for your reply

There are some weird places up top where oil can come from on an R51. Put a teaspoon of UV dye in the crank and drive it for a day or two. The dye doesn't lie.

Mmmh, I have a R50, not a R51...

Where can we find the UV dye please?
Is there any protocol to respect?
Sorry that thing I never have done it.

Thanks in advance.

My typo, sorry, but the same applies to all the axial VQ engines. You can get UV kits anyplace on line, it will consist of a UV flashlight, a pair of yellow filtering eyeglasses, and a bottle of universal UV dye. Just put a teaspoon or two of the dye into the oil fill, then drive the truck for a few days to give it a chance to mix and leak. The leaked oil will show up bright yellow with the glasses and flashlight. If nothing shows then you know the leak is in the transmission and not the engine. If it only shows at the weep hole then you know it's from the rear main or the back of the upper pan. If it's a "sneak" leak coming down from someplace above, you'll see a nice yellow trace leading you back to the source.
