I have finally decided to make the plunge and invest in a RB25det motorset.

I was originally going to roll the dice and order online, however, I recently came into contact with a shop in St Louis that has a few. I would much rather be able to visually see what I am purchasing.

Here's my concern: What should I look for before making my selection. I know I'm supposed to check the wiring/connections and to make sure the ecu/maf are there. Anything else recommended?

Also, how can I confirm that its a s2?

Thanks guys.

in terms of what to look for in picking a motor, i personally would check:overall cleanliness (evidence of any fluid leaks); mileage (if they can prove it some how); condition of the oil pan; compression test numbers; condition of wiring, connectors, and sensors; condition of the turbo, see if theyre willing to start it so you can hear it(which i doubt but is always a plus), make sure that the transmission coming with the motor set is a true rb25 transmission ( i almost got sent a rb25 motor with rb20 trans but i made sure to have them check)..

personally i would not be ashamed to ask as many questions as i want and even ask to crack it open to see the condition of the motor internally..

i've done a few swaps, and the first time i just went with the best deal and didnt really ask any questions. i ended up with a motor that was filled to the brim with sludge, annihilated oil pan, and a blown turbo..

in terms of IDing a s2 rb25, they dont have an ignitor chip (located on the coilpack cover on s1's), the maf is 3 pins and has a pink label, 2 different colored plugs on the tps, and from what i know the ecu code is G8

That is exactly the insight I was looking for!

How can I check to see if its the correct trans?

hah. It sort of is an investment...just not one that will reward me with monetary gains..haha

well in terms of IDing a rb25 trans, i dont know how exactly. check this link out zerothread/192792

in it, it has some pictures and states that the shifter plate on a true rb25det trans isnt flat but instead has a slope. i wish i could confirm this on mine but i dont remember and dont feel like tearing everything apart on my car, so let's just take that threads word for it. another way i can think to help make sure is if they have any rb25 or z32 driveshafts laying around, you can slip it in to make sure it fits, or even use a 240 driveshaft and see if it doesnt fit.

if you know what the sr/ka trans look like, you can probably figure out whether or not its the right trans just by looking at it.
