I got a quick line on this _spotless_ 93...$1200:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...39190

So here's the best part: he hands me a receipt from Midas for $2000+ that lists new springs/struts, brakes (rotors/pads/calipers all around), and a muffler. The car drives like it's new!

I bought it assuming it would need a new engine...the engine work the guy was describing is simply a noisy lifter/HLA. I used some engine flush, then filled it up w/ Mobil 1 & some Marvel Mystery oil (find out about it if you've never heard of it). After 2-3 days, 95% of the noise is gone. It's got 140k+, so I figure I can get a solid year of hard driving on it before I'll need to do something else. By then, I should be able to afford to at least swap a low mileage JY motor in, or best case a CA or SR swap.

So now I'm trying to budget the additional $2k+ that I had planned on spending to buy a 240sx. My plan is to run it in autocross, probably DSP/Street Prepared (it's already go the intake, so what the heck).Agenda: transmission: Find a deal on the manual transmission + driveshaft + master/slave + flywheel + clutch. Too expensive to do through the junkyard, so I'll just have to watch eBay & the classifieds for a parts car & get a deal.Exhaust: Bolt up a catback for some extra top end power...no decent shops in Austin, TX that can do mandrel fab work that I can find. Maybe go used on this if I can find something decent.Suspension: Not sure here; it has pretty solid suspension, so I'm thinking of putting just swaybars on for now to save some $$ (springs/struts ain't cheap, unless you all have better ideas). Pilot strut bars from Phase2 are already on the way (hopefully that'll shutup the creaky popup window).Brakes: stainless steel lines & some high performance fluid...feels good overall already.Wheels/tires: pick up some used 16" wheels w/ good rubber (e.g. Koseis, something relatively light & cheap)Engine: Remove clutch fan, go with electric fan

I've been prowling the boards for a year or two planning to do a project like this, so I guess this is my proverbial brain dump. Any input is appreciated...I've got a total budget of about $2-2.5k right now (probably another $5k next year) to build a comfortable daily driver, which can double as a fun autocrosser on the weekends.

sounds like you got a pretty good deal. 2k to work with eh. well you can do like you said with the exaust and such as far as suspension goes if its all been rerplaced and you arent swapping for a year don't worry about it. id put most of the money back and keep saving for the engine. a 300zx brake upgrade would be a good mod to start with.

Exactly. The stuff I can do is pretty big in DSP, but brakes is not one of them. I figure once these pads run out, I'll put some EBC Green Stuffs on there.I kind of wanted to stay in G Stock initially, but the car came with an Injen intake, so I'm sort of using it for an excuse to do some more mods to the car to make it a little more fun.

Sweet! That's a hell of a deal. I'm working on a deal kinda like that myself right now. Anyway, welcome to NICO! I hope you stick around and keep us posted on your progress. Just don't get stuck in STS...
