It creates what is called a vacuum leak. It lets air into the intake which didn't pass through the MAF and therefore the ECU doesn't know to add fuel for it. It leans out the engine, causing poor running or stalling depending on the severity of the leak. Replace the hose as soon as you can. If it should happen to tear wide open while you're tring to brake.... bad news!
