I LOVE this car. Austrailian 180sx. Do a search for "180sx africana" if you want more pictures of it.

What is the technique to get it so even? I've laid two coats on the rear of mine and its still real uneven. Is it the paint?

1) shake the can well. 2) don't lean the can forward, backwards, upside down, etc. etc. etc3) use a spray gun

What does a paint job cost in that real satin black? Not the rattlecan stuff.

This is assuming ZERO teardown at the paint shop, I'd do all that in advance.

It's gotta be less than a normal, clear-coat job, right?

After putting 3 coats on the car make sure to wet sand the whole car each panel at a time.

Just grab an empty spray bottle and put water in it. Get some high grid sand paper and start on one panel. Make sure the panel is always wet.

You can use your water hose too.

This will make the flat black a lot more even.

My friend did it to his car. Came out awesome.

a real non-glossy finish is actually achieved by additives or mattening agents in the clearcoat. at least, that's my understanding.

therefore, there's the same amount of work involved, even if it's not glossy, as the paint shop still needs to spray a clearcoat.
